Transfer news: Bayern Munich set to complete signing of Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid



Bayern Munich are on the brink of signing Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid, according to the Bundesliga club's financial director Jan-Christian Dreesen.

Dreesen said an agreement had been struck "in principle" with the Spanish club,

with the 2010 World Cup winner due in Munich later on Thursday for a medical and to discuss terms.

The 32-year-old would become the fifth Spanish player on the Bavarians' books together with Pepe Reina, Juan Bernat, Thiago and Javi Martinez.

Bayern on Wednesday completed the signing of Mehdi Benatia from Roma for a fee of £20.7million and they were not expected to venture into the transfer market again this summer.

DONE DEAL: @XabiAlonso has completed his move to #FCBayern! Contract between FCB & @realmadriden signed. He will say his farewells at 11am.

"The club did not want me to leave. It was my own decision. Afterwinning La Decima, I felt I needed a new challenge. I felt that the timehad come to go," Alonso said at a press conference.

"I did notdecide to leave because of the arrival of Kroos. Madrid have made agreat signing with him. We would both have played a lot.

"I amnot upset or anything. Signing Kroos was a well-though decision that Irespect. Madrid have a great team and can fight for all titles.

"Ineed a certain motivation to get the best out of myself. Winning LaDecima was that motivation at Madrid, but I needed a change to reach mypeak again. The time was right to move on.
