Juan Cuadrado: Chelsea sign Fiorentina winger for £23.3m

Chelsea have signed Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado for an initial fee of £23.3m, which could rise to £26.8m.

The 26-year-old, who impressed for Colombia at the World Cup, joined Chelsea after fellow winger Andre Schurrle moved to Wolfsburg for £22m.

Cuadrado has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the English league leaders.

Chelsea fringe winger Mohamed Salah, 22, is likely to go on loan to Fiorentina as part of the deal.

Cuadrado said: "I am very happy and thankful for this opportunity I've been given.

This is a great club and honestly it is like a dream to join the Chelsea family and to know that the manager believes in me. I'm happy."

It is thought Cuadrado, who has scored five goals in 37 international appearances, had a release clause in his contract of £26.8m.

Cuadrado played in Italy for five and a half years, initially joining Udinese from Medellin in his homeland in 2009. After a loan spell at Lecce, he moved to Fiorentina in 2012 and scored 20 goals in 85 Serie A appearances for the Florence side.

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella revealed the deal was imminent on Friday, saying: "It was a sale that had to be done.

"Cuadrado is a player that has always arrived with a smile and given everything to Fiorentina - I'm happy for him because he is going to a big club."

Salah has made 19 appearances for Chelsea since joining the club from Basel for a fee in the region of £11m in January 2014.

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Juan Cuadrado from Fiorentina.

The 26-year-old has joined on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

Upon signing, he said: ‘I am very happy and thankful for this opportunity I’ve been given.

The attacking midfielder arrives at Stamford Bridge after five-and-a-half years in Italy, first with Udinese before switching to Fiorentina in 2012 after a loan spell at Lecce.

Cuadrado plays predominantly behind a striker, but he is also comfortable on either flank. Pacy and agile, he is a purposeful attacking threat with an eye for the spectacular.

The Colombian, who has 37 international caps and five goals, was a key figure in his country’s impressive 2014 World Cup campaign. He scored in a group-stage victory against Japan before ending the tournament at the quarter-final stage with four assists, a record equalled only by World Cup winner Toni Kroos.

SALAH LOAN CONFIRMED

Sky Italia have just confirmed Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah has joined Fiorentina on an 18-month loan as part of the deal that sees Juan Cuadrado move in the opposite direction.

And the Serie A club will have the chance to sign the Egypt international on a permanent basis in the summer of 2016.

CHELSEA CLOSE IN ON CUADRADO

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Fiorentina's Juan Cuadrado with the winger in London for his medical and to complete the paperwork ahead of a move to Stamford Bridge.

The deal is expected to finally cost the Blues up to £26m but Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry believes the Premier League leaders are getting a player who will add something extra to their squad.

Juan Cuadrado: Chelsea close to £23.3m deal for Colombian

Chelsea are close to finalising a £23.3m deal to sign Fiorentina's 26-year-old winger Juan Cuadrado.

The Colombian has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League leaders and the clubs are concluding the final details of the move.

The total fee, with add-ons, could eventually be £26.8m - a figure that matches Cuadrado's release clause at the Italian club.

Mohamed Salah, 22, is likely to go on loan to Fiorentina as part of the deal.

However, Egyptian winger Salah has yet to decide on a move to Serie A.

If discussions conclude swiftly, the winger - who starred in last summer's World Cup - could even arrive in London for a medical on Friday.

Cuadrado's imminent arrival also means Chelsea's 24-year-old German forward Andre Schurrle is now almost certain to leave Stamford Bridge before Monday's transfer deadline.

German club Wolfsburg have opened discussions on a potential £22m deal.

Fiorentina and Chelsea have agreed terms for Mohamed Salah who's been chased by a host of clubs, including Mourinho's former club Inter.

As our colleague Manuele Baiochini reveals, Fiorentina will loan the Egyptian winger for free until June 2015 with a clause that could prolong the loan by one year but where the Viola will have to pay ? 1 million should they choose to exercise that option.

Now, all that remains is for Fiorentina to find an agreement with the player but the parties are optimistic as the Viola and Chelsea are ready to conclude another transfer deal, after having finalized a deal for Cuadrado's transfer to Chelsea.

Meanwhile, we also understand that Chelsea are still interested in signing Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado in the January transfer window.

The two clubs remain in talks for the player, who has a buyout clause of more than £26m in his contract with the Serie A club.

But whether La Viola will allow the Colombia international to move to Stamford Bridge this month will be determined by whether he asks for a transfer to the Blues.

Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado has made it clear he wants to join Chelsea, Sky sources understand.

The Serie A club are reluctant to let the Colombian winger leave for anything less thant his £26.8m buyout clause, and Sky Sports News HQ understands discussions are still ongoing over a potential move to Stamford Bridge before the deadline.

No formal offer has yet been accepted for Cuadrado, who played for Fiorentina against Roma on Sunday, and his current manager Vincenzo Montella is at pains to let him leave following 21 goals in 82 appearances for the club.

Montella said last week: “I believe, as of today, there are no possibilities he will leave Fiorentina. He knows this and that these situations get exaggerated.

“I’m not angry with the media, In this case I’m not referring to the media, but to football. All that is being said is just talk and nothing more. The player is not involved in all of this.”

Sky sources understand Chelsea made an offer of £20.6m for Cuadrado, which was turned down last Wednesday.

The deal is believe to also hinge on the potential exits from west London of Mohamed Salah, who is of interest to Roma, and Andre Schurrle, who is wanted by Wolfsburg.
