Liverpool 1-1 Sion: Adam Lallana scores but Reds held again in Europa League



Liverpool continued a stuttering start to their Europa League campaign as they drew with FC Sion at Anfield.
Adam Lallana gave the hosts a perfect start, scoring from close range after Divock Origi's cross despite appearing to be offside in the build-up.
The Swiss side drew level through Ebenezer Assifuah's cute finish.
Origi and Lallana were both denied by Sion goalkeeper Andris Vanins, as Liverpool recorded a second consecutive draw in Group B.
There was a smattering of boos at the final whistle after frustration mounted against a team who are mid-table in the Swiss Super League.
The Reds have scored more than one goal on only one occasion this term under Brendan Rodgers but, with two games against Russian side Rubin Kazan to come,
the Liverpool boss will hope to achieve the victories they need to take charge of what appears to be a relatively easy group.
Playing in a 3-5-2 formation, Liverpool paid for their profligacy and with seven changes to the team after the Premier League win over Aston Villa last Saturday,
there were times when Sion, led by the pace and strength of Assifuah, threatened Liverpool's back-line.



Which fringe players staked their claim?

Rodgers stuck to his preferred policy of selecting fringe players and youngsters for the Europa League, with Sunday's Merseyside derby also influencing his thinking.
Daniel Sturridge was among those rested, allowing £10m Belgium international striker Origi the chance to make an impression.
He set up Lallana's goal and although he was twice denied by the impressive Vanins, he showed signs he could be finding his feet after a hesitant start to his Anfield career, having been on loan at Lille last season.
Danny Ings partnered the 20-year-old up front and was effervescent on the day he received his first call-up to the England squad, while Lallana showed some nice touches and took his goal well.
Jordan Rossiter continued in midfield after playing in the opening group game in Bordeaux, and was steady alongside Joe Allen.



Did the system work?

Liverpool created plenty of chances and, had Origi been more ruthless, they would have sealed a comfortable victory.
Other problems came in defence as Nathaniel Clyne and Jordan Ibe started at wing-back, with Joe Gomez, Kolo Toure and Emre Can making up a back three.
Clyne gave the ball away for the equaliser, with Xavier Kouassi finding Assifuah with a diagonal ball, which caught out Ibe on the left.
But Liverpool looked more solid when Clyne was replaced by Alberto Moreno at half-time, with Ibe switching to the right wing-back position.
The introduction of Philippe Coutinho after 61 minutes gave the hosts some extra guile up front, and although Liverpool are now five games unbeaten there is a still a feeling that without Sturridge and the injured Christian Benteke they are lacking firepower.

Manager reaction

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers: "The result was disappointing considering the number of chances we created.
We worked well and had a good start but gave away a disappointing goal.
The players worked hard but we couldn't score the goals. You have to be clinical.
"We scored a good first goal. They weren't half chances, they were good chances and you have to score them at this level.
We have to win a game like that."

Monaco 1-1 Tottenham: Stephan El Shaarawy cancels out Erik Lamela opener



Tottenham conceded a late goal to draw against a poor Monaco side in the Europa League.
At a lifeless Stade Louis II stadium, the home side grabbed an equaliser through Stephan El Shaarawy, who headed in Nabil Dirar's brilliant cross.
Nacer Chadli struck a shot narrowly over the bar in the first half, before Erik Lamela gave Tottenham the lead by finishing off a slick team move.
Harry Kane could have grabbed a second but had a low shot and header saved.
Tottenham are unbeaten in Group J after a win over Azerbaijani side Qarabag in their opening match.
Against Monaco, they looked like coasting to the three points after controlling most of the game, before two substitutes combined nine minutes from time to claim a point the hosts did not deserve.Alli looks the real deal

After an exciting start to the season for Spurs, Dele Alli was given his first England call-up earlier in the day, and the 19-year-old showed his credentials with another eye-catching performance.
The former MK Dons man is strong enough to handle the physical side of the game and, despite his age, showed maturity in dealing with his defensive responsibilities.
He worked hard to win back the ball, as well as making a crucial block on the edge of the area in the first half.
Offensively, his crisp forward passing and neat footwork put Tottenham on the front foot on numerous occasions, but most impressive was his composure in the opposition penalty area.
It led to the opener as he turned a Monaco defender before seeing his shot saved, with Lamela on hand to tap into an open net. Striker Kane was also a beneficiary of his good work but he could not find the back of the net.
Alli's all-action style may just provide the drive Roy Hodgson needs in England's central midfield, reminiscent at times of former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard in the early part of his career.

Man of the match Lamela finally proving his worth?



It has taken a while, and it is still early in the season, but Argentine midfielder Lamela looks like he is finally beginning to repay the club record £30m fee that Spurs paid Roma in 2013.
He pulled the strings for Tottenham in their Premier League victory over Manchester City on Saturday and was impressive in the 65 minutes he was on the field in Monaco.
His graceful touch and ability to carry the ball has never been in question, but there is an end product to his game now.
He started and finished the move for Tottenham's goal and has now netted three times and provided two assists in his past five games.
Lamela's performance was made easier by the time and space the hosts gave Spurs, but the visitors lost their focal point once he went off.
Monaco, who saw over £100m worth of talent depart in the transfer window including Anthony Martial to Manchester United, created little until a well-worked leveller that will leave Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino frustrated.

On his England call-up: "I was speechless. It has been a really good start to the season for me and I maybe didn't expect it to go this well."

Europa League round-up: Napoli complete Italian job



Napoli made it three wins out of three for Italian sides in the Europa League on Thursday night with a 2-0 victory at Legia Warsaw.

Napoli and FC Midtjylland are both sitting pretty on six points at the top of Group D after making it two wins in two matches, Dries Mertens and Gonzalo Higuain scoring for Napoli, while Midtjylland were comfortable 3-1 victors at Club Brugge.

After Liverpool drew 1-1 at home to FC Sion, the other game in Group B also finished all square as Rubin Kazan and Bordeaux contested a goalless stalemate in Russia.

Both matches in Group A also saw the points shared as Molde and Ajax drew 1-1 while substitute Fernandao scored either side of half-time as Fenerbahce fought back from a two-goal deficit to draw at Celtic, who had looked in control following quick-fire goals from Leigh Griffiths and Kris Commons.

Competition favourites Borussia Dortmund again had to come from behind as they too drew 1-1 in Greece with PAOK thanks to a strike from Gonzalo Castro. Also in that group, Krasnodar defeated Qabala 2-1.

Sporting Braga and Rapid Vienna also have 100 per cent records after 1-0 successes - Braga at home to FC Groningen and Vienna away at Dinamo Minsk.

After Tottenham drew 1-1 at Monaco, the other game in Group J threw up a surprise as FK Qarabag defeated Anderlecht 1-0.

Villarreal got their first points on the board with a 1-0 home win against Viktoria Plzen, who had Vaclav Prochazka sent off 10 minutes from time, and Slovan Liberec did likewise by recording a surprise 1-0 victory in Marseille thanks to Vladimir Coufal's late goal.

Schalke made it two wins from two matches in Group K as Franco Di Santo scored a first-half hat-trick in a 4-0 victory against Asteras Tripoli. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar completed the rout in the 84th minute.



Basle, Partizan Belgrade and Lokomotiv Moscow are also on six points after victories on Thursday evening.

Basle and Lokomotiv were both 2-0 winners, against Lech Poznan and Skenderbeu Korce respectively, while Partizan beat Augsburg 3-1 in Germany despite having Aleksandar Subic sent off just after the hour mark.

Fiorentina beat Belenenses 4-0 in Portugal, while there were five goals at the Olympic Stadium in Rome as Lazio edged a 3-2 win against St Etienne, who had Robert Beric and Moustapha Bayal Sall sent off.

Dnipro joined Lazio on four points in Group G as they won 1-0 at Rosenborg.

Sparta Prague overcame Apoel Nicosia 2-0 and there was also a home win for AZ Alkmaar as they defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1. Besiktas and Sporting Lisbon drew 1-1 in the Turkish capital.
