Manchester City 4-1 Hull City: David Silva returns in easy win

By Lewis Jones
Last Updated: 01/12/15 11:20pm

Man City are on course to reclaim the trophy they won in 2014 after a 4-1 Capital One Cup quarter-final win over Hull City.

David Silva captained the team on his first start since October 3 after recovering from an ankle injury and played 82 minutes as goals from Wilfried Bony, Kelechi Iheanacho and two from Kevin De Bruyne did the job.

Steve Bruce's men knocked out Leicester City and Swansea City en route to the last eight but City's class was a step too far for the Championship side, who scored a late consolation through Andy Robertson.

Silva was one of five changes to the team that beat Southampton 3-1 on Saturday as Bony started in the lone striker role after Sergio Aguero sustained a foot injury at the weekend.

Bruce decided to make seven changes to his team that were humbled 2-0 by Derby County on Friday.

City were quickly in control of proceedings and were ahead inside 11 minutes.

With Hull camped deep inside their own half, De Bruyne took advantage of the space in front of the back four and hammered a shot from 22 yards that came back off the post. Bony reacted quicker than Alex Bruce and knocked the rebound home.

Silva and Fabian Delph were creating problems for the Hull midfield with their clever movement and intricate passing. They combined on 19 minutes with Silva playing in the England midfielder down the right edge of the box but he fired into the side netting.

Hull offered little going forward as on-loan Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom struggled to get any change out of Nicholas Otamendi.

City continued to control proceedings in the second-half but the second goal was elusive and Hull began to grow into the game. Substitute Mo Diame almost opened up the watertight City defence on 61 minutes but Willy Caballero flew out of his goal to deal with the danger.

Silva fired a 25-yard effort just past the post on 70 minutes before De Bruyne had an effort punched clear six minutes later.

The pressure was building on Hull and as they opened up in search of an equaliser, City doubled their lead.

Raheem Sterling made an instant impact from the bench to fire a low cross into the box which was gobbled up from close range by Iheanacho.

The floodgates then opened.

A long punt up-field was flicked on by Iheanacho and De Bruyne read the touch before tucking the ball into the far corner.

He had the ball in the net again five minutes later, smashing a free-kick from the edge of the area in between Harry Maguire and goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic, who rather left the ball for each other to deal with.

Robertson showed great skill from a tight angle to make it 4-1 with almost the last kick of the game, but it mattered little.

This was City's night, where their shining light returned.

Middlesbrough 0-2 Everton: Gerard Deulofeu sends Toffees into Capital One Cup semi-finals

Last Updated: 01/12/15 11:04pm

Gerard Deulofeu scored one and made another as Everton progressed to the Capital One Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

The Everton winger opened the scoring with a memorable solo strike on 20 minutes, before turning provider for Romelu Lukaku to head home eight minutes later.

Christian Stuani squandered Middlesbrough's best chance in the second half, heading over when unmarked with 70 minutes gone.

In front of their biggest crowd of the season, Boro were largely restricted to shots from distance, and Stewart Downing twice forced Joel Robles into saves with powerful efforts from outside the box.

Everton will discover their opponents when the Capital One Cup semi-final draw is made live on Sky Sports News HQ following the conclusion of Wednesday night's match between Southampton and Liverpool.

Roberto Martinez made three changes from the 3-3 draw against Bournemouth, but the most notable addition to the team sheet was the return of Leighton Baines to the squad after ankle surgery.

Aitor Karanka made six changes of his own as Boro came into the match with four clean sheets from their previous five games, but they were quickly on the back foot.

Karanka had earmarked Deulofeu for success after working with him as a Spanish national youth team coach, and the winger opened the scoring with a stunning piece of individual brilliance.

The warning signs had been there from the start for the home side as Lukaku headed narrowly wide inside the opening 10 minutes.

Just prior to the strike Downing forced Robles into action with a 25-yard free kick, and Stuani had the ball in the net, only for the goal to be correctly disallowed for a foul on the Everton 'keeper.

But those opportunities came against the run of play as Deulofeu put Everton ahead with 20 minutes gone.

The winger picked up the ball just inside Boro's half, and beat Adam Clayton and Ben Gibson before picking out the bottom corner of Tomas Mejias' net from the edge of the box.

He was giving Fernando Amorebieta a difficult evening, and shortly after scoring he was at it again, twisting the left-back into knots down the right flank and capping off a 28-pass move with the perfect cross for Lukaku.

Deulofeu beat the former Fulham man with six stepovers before finding the head of the Everton striker, who steered the ball over Mejias for his sixth goal in his last five games.

A piece of improvisation from striker Kike brought about Middlesbrough's clearest first-half chance, but he chipped his effort just wide of Robles' post after a strong run from Stuani.

Karanka made a change at the break, replacing the ineffective Carlos de Pena with former Everton trainee Adam Forshaw, and the home side improved without carving out clear-cut opportunities.

Referee Roger East turned down a half-hearted penalty appeal after the ball struck Ramiro Funes Mori just inside the area, and Downing forced Robles into another smart save with a stinging shot from distance.

Stuani headed over their most presentable chance 20 minutes from the end after Emilio Nsue's cross had taken Stones out of the game, but the forward could not keep his effort down.

Baines was introduced for his first appearance of the season with 17 minutes to play, and his return will be a big boost for the Toffees going into a busy period of fixtures, although the left-back picked up a booking for dissent following his introduction.

Karanka threw on Albert Adomah and George Friend as Middlesbrough chased the game late on, but it was Everton who looked the more likely to add to the scoreline. Mejias did well to keep out substitute Kevin Mirallas' low drive as the away side threatened, and in the end Everton's Premier League class was too much for their Championship opposition.

The result sends Everton into the last four for the first time in eight years, and moves them another step closer to ending their 20-year trophy wait.

Stoke 2-0 Sheffield Wednesday: Mark Hughes' side ease into last four

Last Updated: 01/12/15 10:40pm

Stoke booked their place in the last four of the Capital One Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Championship side Sheffield Wednesday at the Britannia Stadium.

Before the game Mark Hughes warned Stoke of complacency against a Sheffield Wednesday side that had seen off Premier League sides Arsenal and Newcastle in previous rounds, and his words seemed to have the desired effect with Ibrahim Afellay's volley giving the hosts the lead in the 29th minute.

After the break Carlos Carvalhal's side went close through Daniel Pudil's shot but just as they started to threaten an equaliser, Stoke, who lost Peter Crouch to injury, made the game safe thanks to substitute Phil Bardsley's 75th-minute free-kick.

Victory sees Stoke, who take their place in Wednesday night's semi-final draw, reach the last four of the League Cup for the first time since lifting the trophy in the 1971-72 season.

Stoke made five changes to the side that were beaten 2-0 away at Sunderland with Crouch, Marc Wilson, Geoff Cameron, Marco van Ginkel and Afellay all coming into the side.

However, Hughes was forced into a change after just 13 minutes when Crouch, making just his sixth start of the season, was forced off with a hamstring injury and replaced by Joselu.

A minute later, the Spaniard was straight into action laying the ball off to Glen Johnson to thread the ball through to Jonathan Walters, who shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Sheffield Wednesday, who made seven changes of their own, were struggling to get a foothold in the match but were nearly handed one when Marko Arnautovic gifted Kieran Lee possession on the halfway line. The midfielder burst forward before clipping a cross towards Gary Hooper but the former Celtic striker could not make any connection.

That was to be the Championship side's only real chance of the half and they found themselves behind in the 29th minute when Afellay showed great technique to volley Joselu's cross past Joe Wildsmith and into the bottom corner.

The goal sparked Stoke into life and they were inches away from extending their lead with Walters just failing to connect with Erik Pieters' cross.

Just moments before the break Hughes' men had another chance when Pudil - on in place of the injured Tom Lees - left his back-pass short but Wildsmith was quickly off his line to beat Joselu to the ball.

Both sides made changes at the break with Phil Bardsley replacing Glen Johnson for the hosts and Lewis McGugan coming on place of Jack Hunt as Carvalhal switched to a 4-4-2 formation.

But it was Stoke who continued to press forward as Joselu failed to get enough power on a free header to trouble Wildsmith from Afellay's corner.

Stoke almost extended their lead in the 59th minute when Joselu's shot was well saved by the leg of Wildsmith and Afellay's follow-up was blocked by Modou Sougou.

After that Wednesday started to build some pressure on the Premier League side with Rhoys Wiggins and Ross Wallace testing the Stoke defence with crosses but Carvalhal's side were struggling to test Jack Butland.

They did have one brief sight of the England goalkeeper's goal when Pudil sent a volley inches wide, but Stoke then wrapped things up with 15 minutes to play as Van Ginkel touched off a free-kick to Bardsley, who fired a powerful shot in off the post to seal his side's semi-final place.

And Hughes will be hoping history repeats itself as he targets next year's Wembley final because on every occasion Stoke have reached the semi-finals of the League Cup they have gone on to reach the final.

Southampton 1-6 Liverpool: Divock Origi scores hat-trick as Reds rout Saints

By Patrick Surlis
Last Updated: 02/12/15 11:50pm

Divock Origi scored a brilliant hat-trick as Liverpool reached the Capital One Cup semi-finals for the third time in five years with an impressive 6-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Sadio Mane headed in the opener after 41 seconds, the 100th goal of Ronald Koeman's reign, but a Daniel Sturridge brace and an opportunistic strike from Origi had Liverpool firmly in control by half-time.

The Reds will play Stoke City in the semi-finals with the first-leg tie taking place week commencing January 4, and the second-leg match set for week commencing January 25, both live on Sky Sports.

Ronald Koeman made five changes from Saints' 3-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, while Jurgen Klopp rotated six from his side's victory over Swansea, the key addition being the return of Sturridge to the starting line-up.

The Belgium international made the game safe with a stunning first-time finish for Liverpool's fourth on 68 minutes, before substitute Jordon Ibe smashed home a fifth to seal the rout. Origi made it six to complete his hat-trick with four minutes to play, heading home Brad Smith's cross.

Koeman had lamented his side's slow start at Manchester City, but they were quick out of the blocks at St Mary's, Mane converting Ryan Bertrand's cross to put Southampton ahead inside the first minute.

Dusan Tadic and Bertrand were given too much space down the left, and the England international picked out Mane at the back post. The Senegal international kept his header down under pressure from Alberto Moreno, giving Adam Bogdan no chance in the Liverpool goal for his first strike since his equaliser at Anfield on October 25.

Victor Wanyama and Mane again had chances as the Saints pressed for a second in a bright opening 15 minutes, but that was as good as it got for Koeman's side as Liverpool quickly settled and equalised through Sturridge.

The Liverpool striker latched onto Joe Allen's through ball, slipped Steven Caulker, who was making his first Saints start for two months, and arrowed his left foot shot past Maarten Stekelenburg from a tight angle.

Barely four minutes later the Reds completed the turnaround, Sturridge doubling his tally with a half-volley from Emre Can's expertly executed cross.

The striker was the grateful recipient of poor defending from the hosts on both occasions, but the returning Reds forward took his third and fourth goals of the season with the confidence that belied a player making his first start since early October.

Strike partner Origi was enjoying his best performance in a Reds shirt, and he made it three on the stroke of half-time, turning home Moreno's low drive for his first goal for the club.

Graziano Pelle slid Mane in behind the Liverpool defence to present Southampton their first opportunity of the second half, but Dejan Lovren recovered well to block, before substitute Shane Long nodded wide from Tadic's chipped cross shortly after.

Klopp took no chances with Sturridge, replacing the striker with Jordon Ibe on 59 minutes, and the substitute made an immediate impact, setting up Origi's second on the night and Liverpool's fourth.

The winger cut in from the right flank and found his team-mate in space, with Origi blasting past Stekelenburg to put the game beyond doubt with just over 20 minutes to play.

Ibe put away Liverpool's fifth goal five minutes later, controlling on the chest before powerfully striking into the bottom corner and Origi sealed his hat-trick with a routine header from Smith's inch-perfect cross - Liverpool's sixth goal from their seventh shot on target.

The defeat is Southampton's third in as many games, and they face Aston Villa next at St Mary's in the Premier League. As for Liverpool, since their 1-1 draw against the Saints in the league in late October, they have won seven of their last eight, and will be full of confidence heading into their Super Sunday clash with Newcastle.
