Sources: Dwyane Wade open to outside offers as Heat talks stall



Dwyane Wade's initial contract discussions with the Miami Heat have not produced a common ground between the parties, which has the All-Star guard preparing to field outside offers when free agency opens on Friday, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that Wade's representatives have made it known to multiple teams over the last several days that he will be on the market, sources said. Some teams have been skeptical, wondering if Wade would seriously consider leaving the franchise where he's played 13 seasons and won three titles.

The Heat and Wade had several contentious weeks last year before they agreed on a one-year, $20 million deal for this past season.

Wade, 34, played in 74 games, his most in five years, and averaged 19 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists in what was seen as a strong indication he was past knee issues that plagued him for several years.

At the end of the season, Wade said he hoped negotiations with the Heat would go more smoothly this summer.

"I hope that everything is quiet and works out the way I want it to," Wade said. "But I have no control over that, as much as people might think. It's a lot of moving parts in free agency. I'm not worried about it."

The Heat currently have around $40 million in cap space and have nine free agents including Wade, Hassan Whiteside and Luol Deng.

They are one of the six teams to have a confirmed meeting with Kevin Durant following the opening of free agency. This has led the team to attempt to keep maximum flexibility as they head into July.

In addition to gauging Durant's interest, Miami has to manage the Chris Bosh situation as his status heading into next season is undetermined.

Sources: Tim Duncan exercises contract option for next season

San Antonio Spurs center Tim Duncan has elected to exercise the $5.6 million player option on his 2016-17 contract – but that is not an indication that he’s planning to return for his 20th NBA season, league sources told The Vertical.

Duncan, 40, is still seriously contemplating his desire to continue playing and judge how his body feels, league sources said. The Spurs are allowing Duncan to make a decision on his own timetable, but there’s no question that this offseason is the most seriously he’s contemplated retirement.

Duncan – a five-time NBA champion, three-time NBA Finals MVP and two-time regular season MVP – could take his decision into the start of July free agency.

Duncan’s productivity declined this past season when he averaged 8.6 points and 7.3 rebounds. He’s averaged 19 points and 10.8 rebounds for his career.

The Spurs lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in six games in the Western Conference semifinals.

Sources: Dwight Howard grants Hawks, Celtics first free-agency meetings

The Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics are the first known teams to secure face-to-face recruiting meetings with free-agent big man Dwight Howard, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN that Howard, 30, is likely to meet with as many as five teams in free agency, with a return to the Houston Rockets widely seen as unlikely after Howard declined his $23.2 million player option for next season.

Teams can officially begin negotiating with free agents on Friday at 12:01 a.m. ET.

The Miami Heat, sources said, have not yet booked a meeting with Howard in free agency, but could emerge as a more serious Howard suitor after registering preliminary interest in him.

ESPN reported earlier Tuesday that the Hawks, while still trying to convince Kevin Durant to grant them a face-to-face sitdown, have been weighing a run at Howard to pair him with Al Horford in their frontcourt. Howard, a three-time former NBA defensive player of the year, is a native of Atlanta.

Horford is also a free agent this summer and will receive considerable outside interest.

Before Howard opted for free agency by declining his 2016-17 option, ESPN's Calvin Watkins reported that some members of the Rockets' organization were lobbying Howard to stay.

But the recent arrival of new head coach Mike D'Antoni, under whom Howard never clicked when both were with the Los Angeles Lakers, encouraged interested teams to pursue Howard this summer.

The Nets have reportedly emerged as the front runners to land Rajon Rondo during free agency.


The Nets are reportedly willing to offer Rondo a max-deal, although sources close to Rondo say that he's not overly interested in being Brooklyn's only major signing this offseason, so the Nets may need to bring in another star to get Rondo to sign his name on the dotted line. Brooklyn is said to also have interest in Jamal Crawford, Jeremy Lin, Brandon Jennings and Kent Bazemore, so perhaps if they can sign one of those guys, Rondo will be more inclined to sign. Rondo would have nice value as the Nets starting PG.
