Coloccini's career ends under a cloud after relegation with San Lorenzo finally landing their ex-player
Fabricio Coloccini’s career at Newcastle United is over - according to San Lorenzo boss Diego Aguirre. The fallen Magpies captain has signed for the Argentine Primera Division club after a three-year pursuit from the club that once loaned in 2000/01. Coloccini made his intentions to quit United clear earlier this summer when he spoke of Newcastle having a “new project” and admitted he was pining to be back with his family in South America. San Lorenzo coach Diego Aguirre said: “Coloccini will be very welcome.
“He will bring much to the club on and off the field.”
Newcastle are yet to confirm the exit of their club captain after eight years on Tyneside, but the Chronicle understands that the Magpies were looking to add new defensive recruits to their ranks anyway. With Moussa Sissoko’s future also still unclear it means that Newcastle may start the season with a new skipper, although Jonjo Shelvey did do the job for a short spell last season. Coloccini had said earlier this summer: “I think the chances are greater now because of the project they have at Newcastle and because of my age.
“With the relegation, they are pointing to a new plan with young people under 25 years old.
“So it is a matter of talking and then proposing to them my exit.
“At the moment I have in mind going back to Argentine football.
“I want to go back to San Lorenzo and fulfil the dream of entering the pitch with my kids and retire there.”
Coloccini arrived at Newcastle from Deportivo la Coruna in 2008 for £10million with the centre-back joining Kevin Keegan’s side during an uncertain period at St James’ Park.
Back then a boardroom battle between Keegan, Dennis Wise and Derek Llambias erupted and within a few weeks of Coloccini signing for the club, the ex-England boss had walked away from Newcastle.
Coloccini’s first season with the club resulted in relegation but while he insisted last term, Newcastle wouldn’t go down the Magpies dropped out of the Premier League with a game to go.
Weeks later Coloccini told the media in his native Argentina he wanted to quit and San Lorenzo appear to have finally got their man.
