Tamer Haj Mohamad broke well to play in Omar Al Soma who put Syria ahead in the seventh minute, but Australia were level on 12 minutes when Cahill was left unmarked to head home James Troisi's cross.Early in extra-time Syria were reduced to 10 men when Mahmoud Al Mawas was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Robbie Kruse.
And Australia made their numerical advantage count with Cahill heading home a second goal from close range in the 111th minute.
Syria came close to equalising when Al Soma struck the outside of the post with a free kick in the final minutes
