Arsenal and Manchester City are set to move for West Bromwich Albion captain Jonny Evans in January.

Evans will be a target for both Premier League clubs when the transfer window opens, with Albion considering whether to cash in to raise funds for new head coach Alan Pardew.

Pep Guardiola, the City manager, is keen to add a new centre-half and failed in a bid to sign Evans in the summer as Albion stuck rigidly to a £30m+ price tag.

The absence of John Stones with a hamstring injury has heightened City’s need for defensive additions, with Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez also believed to be on the radar.

But it is believed Albion are already bracing themselves for another bid from the runaway league leaders for the Northern Ireland international.

Telegraph Sport understands Arsenal also made a late move to sign Evans a few days before the deadline, with an offer of around £25m rejected.

With Per Mertesacker retiring at the end of this season, Arsene Wenger is prepared to move for Evans if he receives any encouragement.

Evans, 29, is out of contract in over 18 months and, while committed to Albion, he is not expected to sign a new deal with the prospect of European football on offer elsewhere.

Funds will be limited in January for Pardew, with the club’s wage bill almost at its maximum after a major summer spend on new players.

Pardew could sacrifice Evans for £30m and use the money to bring in a number of signings.

When asked if he had received assurances Evans would not be sold in January, Pardew said: “I think the assurance I need is probably from Jonny more than anybody.

“He’s a fabulous player and very important for the club so I will have a good old discussion with him.

“I know from my experience at Newcastle you can lose key players in January, you need to be on your guard to replace them.

“I will have to see how we go and assess the squad quickly. It’s good enough to stay up but when I look at the clubs who are involved, particularly around the relegation area, I know they’re going to do business. You can’t take our eye off that.”

Meanwhile, it has emerged that joint assistant manager Ben Garner is leaving the club.

Garner was banned from the training ground by interim manager Gary Megson and is set to leave permanently after the arrival of Pardew.

City remain interested in West Brom skipper Jonny Evans but unless Frenchman Mangala leaves over the next week, the Northern Ireland centre-back is more likely to move to Arsenal or Leicester.

Evans could remain at West Brom, where he has 18 months remaining on his contract, but the Baggies know he would be allowed to leave the Hawthorns for £3m in the summer if they were relegated.

Manager Alan Pardew wants to fund the purchase of a striker he believes is required to give his side the best chance of avoiding the drop.

Arsene Wenger has insisted Arsenal are ready to carry on spending in the January transfer window - and Jonny Evans is top of their wish list.

Arsenal are keen on West Brom centre half Evans and believe they may have the edge on Manchester City who are looking on the Continent for defensive reinforcements.

Evans, 30, is rated at £20m by West Brom but the Northern Ireland international has 18 months left on his contract, is refusing to sign a new deal and could leave in the summer for £3m if the Baggies go down.

Arsenal have been back in touch with West Brom and Wenger insists there is cash to spend. They have also looked at Mainz defender Abdou Diallo as central defence is the key area they want to strengthen.

Wenger said: “It depends on the opportunities we have. We can buy players. We are busy on all fronts, so overall I think we are open-minded. Every opportunity we have to strengthen our squad, we’ll take.

“If people want to buy some of our players, we have [examined that] - players who have less chances to play, we have done it, who deserve to play because they are great players, who have left us.


“After that, we’ll see at the end. There’s still a lot that will happen as usual on the transfer market.”

Manchester City held talks with West Brom about signing Jonny Evans on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola is looking to add a defender and Alexis Sanchez to his squad this month, with his side still in all four competitions.

Sportsmail understands City representatives spoke to the Baggies this week, with Arsenal also interested in landing Evans.
It is believed Evans, who has 18 months left to run on his contract, could be available for around £20million.

Guardiola still likes Real Sociedad's Inigo Martinez, whose release clause stands at £28.5m, but it was said buying both the Spain international and Sanchez is not deemed feasible this month.

Manchester United are thought to have asked to be kept abreast of any developments regarding Evans, while West Ham have also taken a look.
Arsene Wenger claimed that Arsenal would not be able to match any offer City could present to the 30-year-old.

'If the decision comes to finances against Manchester City, we know we will be second best,' Wenger admitted.
