Liverpool agree £142 million deal to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona

Jason Burt, chief football correspondent
6 JANUARY 2018 • 4:52PM
Liverpool have agreed a 160 million (£142m) deal to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in the biggest-ever transfer involving a British club. An announcement is expected to be made within hours.

Coutinho is due to fly out to Barcelona later on Saturday evening to finalise terms, with the move including a significant immediate down-payment following by achievable, guaranteed add-ons.

Coutinho earlier withdrew from the Liverpool squad that is heading to Dubai for a few days' break after the FA Cup victory over Everton on Friday evening, for which he was officially injured.

The deal concludes a long-running transfer saga with the Brazilian international having hoped to move to Barcelona last summer following the world-record sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool refused to sell then with owners Fenway Sports Group taking the unusual step of releasing a statement declaring that the player would not be sold in that transfer window. But the club has softened its stance in recent weeks - the negotiations being something of a coup for Coutinho’s representative Kia Joorabchian.

Relations between all parties have remained amicable during the negotiations and it is regarded as a good deal for everyone.

Liverpool spent a world-record fee for a defender recently when they signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m. It remains to be seen whether they try and sign a replacement for Coutinho in this window.

The Coutinho deal is the biggest ever involving a British club and the biggest ever signing made by Spanish club. It is the third-highest ever after the PSG deals for Neymar - close to £200m after his release clause was activated - and Kylian Mbappe.

Liverpool AGREE Philippe Coutinho fee with Barcelona - confirmation expected imminently
Brazilian flying to Spain to finalise £142m deal as Reds finally admit defeat

Liverpool have AGREED a £142m deal to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

The transfer is expected to be confirmed in the next 24 hours, with the Brazilian flying to Spain on Saturday evening to complete the formalities.

The fee for the 25-year-old is 160m (£142m). Liverpool will receive £105m up front, with the rest in performance-related add-ons.

It will make Coutinho the second most expensive player in history, behind Neymar, and brings to an end a long and often fractious saga.

Liverpool rejected a number of bids from Barcelona in the summer, when their stance was that the player was simply not for sale.

The club stood firm despite a transfer request, submitted on the eve of the Premier League season. Coutinho returned to action in September having been denied his dream move, and responded with some of his best form for Liverpool.

His desire to move to Barca, however, never wavered. Liverpool were keen to keep their star man until the end of the season, but Coutinho's camp made it clear that they wanted an immediate deal.

That led to an obvious softening in the Reds' position, with manager Jurgen Klopp regularly refusing to discuss the situation - where in the summer he had publicly stated that Coutinho had no price.

Coutinho will leave having made 201 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 54 goals. The Reds paid £8.5m to sign him as a 20-year-old in 2013, and will now look to replace him in this window.

Monaco's Thomas Lemar is their main target, though the Ligue 1 club are reluctant to sell in this window, while the ECHO understands there is no desire to sign Leicester's Riyad Mahrez at this stage.

Coutinho will attend Barcelona's game with Levante on Sunday, and could make his debut for the Catalans on Wednesday against Celta Vigo.

Philippe Coutinho, new FC Barcelona player

The player comes to the Club for the remainder of the season and five more, and will have a buyout clause of 400 million euros

FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Philippe Coutinho. The player will sign a contract for the remainder of the season and five more, and will have a buyout clause of 400 million euros.

We will shortly inform you of the details of the player's arrival and presentation.

The midfielder arrives at FC Barcelona after demonstrating his class as a player with Liverpool and the Brazilian national side.Born on 12 June, 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Phillipe Coutinho is one of the most talented midfielders in the world with the potential to get even better.

The Brazilian has shown his talent and class at the highest level with Premier League club Liverpool and with the Brazilian national side.

Coutinho began his footballing journey in his home town with Vasco de Gama. At the age of just 18 he moved to Europe to begin a new stage of his career at Serie A giants Inter Milan with whom he would go to make his Champions League debut.

After two and half seasons in Milan and six months in Barcelona with the city’s other club Espanyol, Coutinho made the move to the Premier League when he signed for Liverpool in January 2013. With the five times European Champions, the Brazilian quickly established himself as a key player at the club.

A versatile attacking force
The Brazilian is a versatile presence in the squad as his technical ability and vision allow him to play in midfield. His attacking instincts also mean that he is equally at home in a more advanced role on the wing. Coutinho is quick and always willing to take on defenders and his nose for goal is undeniable as he scored 13 times for Liverpool last season.

A Brazilian international since his debut in 2010, he played in the Copa América in 2015 and 2016 for his country as well as playing a vital part in helping the ‘canarinha’ qualify for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.

Jurgen Klopp explains why Liverpool had to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona
Reds boss says club did everything it could to convince Brazilian star to stay

Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool did everything they could to convince Philippe Coutinho to stay at Liverpool - and has every faith that club's "aggressive progression" will continue without the Brazilian.

Coutinho will seal a £142m switch to Barcelona this weekend after the La Liga giants agreed a fee with the Reds for their star midfielder.

Liverpool will get £105m up front with the rest payable in performance-related add-ons. The move comes after Coutinho made it clear he had no desire to remain on Merseyside amid Barcelona's interest.

Explaining the move, Klopp said: “It is with great reluctance that we – as a team and club – prepare to say farewell to a good friend, a wonderful person and a fantastic player in Philippe Coutinho.

“It is no secret that Philippe has wanted this move to happen since July, when Barcelona first made their interest known.

“Philippe was insistent with me, the owners and even his teammates this was a move he was desperate to make happen.

“Despite that, we managed to keep the player here beyond the summer window, hoping that we would be able to persuade him to stay and be part of what we are looking to do.

“I can tell the Liverpool supporters that we, as a club, have done everything within our means to convince Philippe that remaining part of LFC was as attractive as moving to Spain, but he is 100 per cent certain his future – and that of his family – belongs at Barcelona. It is his dream and I am now convinced there is nothing left at our disposal to change his mind."

Klopp praised Coutinho's "professionalism" after his attempts to leave the club in the summer failed. The 25-year-old has been in fine form for the Reds this season, scoring 12 goals, and leaves after 201 appearances in five years on Merseyside.

“Philippe has made a fantastic contribution to this club over his five years of service and as disappointed as we are he doesn’t want to extend that, the relationship we have for him means with a heavy heart we wish him well," Klopp said.

“The player remained dedicated and committed to helping us win matches, producing good performances and training hard each day at Melwood after the summer window had closed, despite failing to convince us to allow him to leave during that period and that level of professionalism reflects positively on him.

“Of course, it is totally understandable that supporters will be disappointed; this is always the case when you have to say goodbye to someone special. But, as hard as it is sometimes to accept, it is part of life and part of football – individuals have their own dreams and their own goals and objectives in life.

“Players will come and players will go, that is football, but as a club we are big enough and strong enough to continue with our aggressive progression on the pitch, even when we lose an important player. We have never been in a better position in recent times, as a club, to react in the right way. We will use our size and strength to absorb moments like this and still move forward."

In the meantime, the Reds must now decide how best to proceed in finding a replacement for Coutinho.

Naby Keita is due to arrive at the end of the season, while there is interest in Monaco star Thomas Lemar. Klopp, though, insisted he retains belief in the players he already has at his disposal.

He said: “I have been here long enough now to know in the history of Liverpool, key players have left before – but the club always goes on. You cannot transfer the heart and soul of Liverpool Football Club, although I am sure there are many clubs who would like to buy it.

“I have so much belief in the talent we have here already and even more faith, together with our owners, that we will make continued investment into the playing squad, which will allow more growth and more improvement.

“So as we bid farewell to Philippe, we continue on our path of progress and development as we work towards our common goal of bringing trophies back to Anfield.”
