Arsenal remain in talks with Sampdoria over the proposed £22million transfer of Lucas Torreira.

The 22-year-old Uruguay international has emerged as a preferred option for Unai Emery who wants a defensive midfielder brought in as part of his summer recruitment plan.

Torreira has a buy out clause but it's understood Arsenal may need to pay in instalments as they look to make the most of their relatively limited budget this window.

Massimo Ferrero, the Sampdoria president said: 'Lucas Torreira has a release clause. Everyone knows it. Whoever wants to take Torreira will have to work with that release clause; ?25m.'

Arsenal have signed Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free and have agreed a deal worth around £16m with Borussia Dortmund for Sokratis Papastathopoulos which is expected to be confirmed next month.

They also have an interest in Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins and have discussed a potential bid for Caglar Soyuncu at Freiburg.

Arsenal: Lucas Torreira agrees deal & Matteo Guendouzi set for medical

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Uruguay international midfielder Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria for £26m.

The 22-year-old, who played in all five of his country's World Cup matches before the quarter-final defeat to France, will wear the number 11 shirt.

Manager Unai Emery said: "In Lucas Torreira we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game. A midfielder with great quality."

Torreira will join on a five-year deal in August after a post-World Cup break.

His move is still subject to "regulatory processes" but he is set to become Emery's fourth signing since succeeding Arsene Wenger as manager.

"He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing," added Emery.

Former Valencia and Paris St-Germain boss Emery has also brought in goalkeeper Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen, defender Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus and defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund.

France under-20 international Matteo Guendouzi, 19, is also undergoing a medical with the club and is expected to sign from Lorient.

Torreira, who plays as a defensive midfielder, broke into Italian club Pescara's first team in 2014-15 and then played for the club on loan after signing for Sampdoria in July of 2015.

He eventually made his Serie A debut for Sampdoria in August 2016 and made 71 appearances across two seasons.

The 22 year-old has just returned from representing his country at the World Cup in Russia, where he featured in all five matches as they progressed to the quarter-finals.Head coach Unai Emery said: “In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game. A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.”

Starting his youth career in Uruguay with I.A 18 Julio and then Montevideo Wanderers, Lucas moved to Italy in 2013 where he joined Pescara. He made his debut there as an 19-year-old in May 2015.

Unai Emery is close to finalising his midfield for next season following positive contract talks with Aaron Ramsey and the planned completion of a £26 million deal for Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira.

With Jack Wilshere moving on after being told that first-team opportunities would be limited, Emery has identified Granit Xhaka and Ramsey as his two senior central midfielders and, with Xhaka having extended his contract until 2023, the expectation now is that Ramsey will follow in committing for what should be the prime years of his career.
