Tottenham are in talks with Lyon over a deal to sign Tanguy NDombele, Sky Sports News understands.

Discussions are understood to be in the early stages and they are still far from agreeing a deal for the 22-year-old France international.

However, according to Sky in Italy, Spurs have made forward steps with Lyon for a player that has also been of interest to Juventus.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has previously said that both Manchester United and Manchester City made enquiries for the player, but Tottenham have been tracking NDombele since the 2017-18 season as a replacement for Mousa Dembele.

Sky Sports News reported that they were interested in a deal last summer but Dembele stayed at Tottenham before finally moving to Chinese club Guangzhou R&F in January.

NDombele is the top target to replace him, while Spurs are also keen on Monaco's Youri Tielemans.

NDombele joined Lyon from Amiens in August 2017 on an initial loan deal and impressed during his debut campaign, racking up 50 appearances in all competitions.

He completed a permanent move to the Groupama Stadium last summer and was rewarded for his continued fine form with a call up to the France national team last October.

Tanguy Ndombele: Tottenham sign France midfielder from Lyon

Tottenham have signed France midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Ligue 1 side Lyon for a club record 60m euros (£53.8m).

The 22-year-old has signed a deal until 2025 and the fee could rise to 70m euros (£62.8m) with incentives.

Tottenham's previous transfer record was the £42m paid to sign defender Davinson Sanchez from Ajax in August 2017.

Ndombele joined Lyon in 2017 and helped them finish third in the French top-flight last season.

He also twice played against Manchester City in Champions League group games.

In total Ndombele, who has six caps for France, made 96 appearances for Lyon and registered 16 assists.

Lyon thanked the player for his time at the club, praising his "professionalism and his performances".

Ndombele is Tottenham's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Jack Clarke from Leeds United.

The winger, who was Spurs' first signing since Brazil forward Lucas Moura joined from Paris St-Germain in January 2018, was immediately loaned back to the Championship side for the 2019-20 season.

Tottenham are on the verge of shattering their transfer record for the Lyon midfielder, Tanguy Ndombele, after agreeing a fee for him of ?62m (£55.45m) plus ?10m in add-ons.

Mauricio Pochettino, the Spurs manager, has made Ndombele his No 1 summer target, as he looks toreinvigorate his squad after two transfer windows without a signing. He has urged Daniel Levy, the chairman, to do everything possible to get Ndombele and it appears that the final obstacle to the blockbuster deal has now been cleared.

Ndombele must still agree personal terms on a long-term contract but that ought not to be a problem, given that the will is there from his side to complete the move. The 22-year-old France international has been given a tour of the Spurs training ground, which left him greatly impressed, and he has been convinced by Pochettino that the next phase of his career will be best served in north London.

Jean-Michel Aulas, the Lyon chairman, has maintained that Ndombele is worth ?75m and, if the deal now proceeds as expected, he will have virtually got his price. What Spurs will get is a player to quicken the pulse; a central midfielder to replace Mousa Dembélé and who mixes skill and electric dribbling with raw power.

According to reports in France, Manchester United could make a late attempt to hijack the deal but Spurs are firmly in the driving seat. Their negotiations with Lyon have been going on for several weeks and the latest phase of them concerned the add-ons. Spurs’ current transfer record is the £42m they paid to take the central defender Davinson Sánchez from Ajax in the summer of 2017.

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a club record deal to sign midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon.

Ndombele is in talks to join Spurs in a deal that could be worth as much as £55million, which would eclipse the £42m the club paid for defender Davinson Sanchez two years ago.

Should he complete his switch, then Ndombele will become Tottenham’s first signing since the arrival of Lucas Moura in January 2018.

It would be a welcome boost for manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is spending the summer in Barcelona and waiting to see whether or not Spurs can deliver his targets.

Ndombele is one of Pochettino’s priorities and the 22-year-old’s arrival will boost Tottenham’s hopes of keeping the Argentine at the club.

Pochettino has made it clear that Spurs need to show more ambition in the transfer window this summer, having failed to make any signings in the last two windows.

Juventus had been chasing Ndombele, but the Italian club are resigning themselves to the fact that, barring a late hitch, he is likely to move to north London.

Ndombele has won four senior caps for France and this season provided three goals with eight assists in 49 competitive games for Lyon.

Other than Ndombele, Tottenham are also hopeful of clinching the signing of Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and are interested in Ajax’s Donny van de Beek and Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo.

Tanguy Ndombele has hailed Tottenham as a "big club" and admitted he is interested in signing for Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs have been in talks with Lyon over a deal for the France midfielder, Sky Sports News understands, but he is also of interest to other clubs including Juventus.

Sky Sports News understands Ndombele will take time to think about his future while on holiday for the rest of June and is expected to make a decision when he returns next month.

Speaking to French publication Telefoot, he said: "It's true that Tottenham are a great team - a big club. They finished fourth in their league, they were finalists in the Champions League.

"They are a big club like many others. Which player would not be interested in a big club?"
