Man City close to sealing Cancelo signing after further Juventus talks



Manchester City and Juventus are close to reaching a deal for right-back Joao Cancelo.

Goal reported on June 6 that the two clubs have been in advanced talks regarding a move for the Portugal international, with Juve holding out for around ?60 million (£53.6m/$67.4m).

Sources in Italy now indicate that further talks have taken place on Monday, and while City are still reluctant to meet Juventus’ top asking price, they are prepared to up their initial offer.

That represents a breakthrough in negotiations and sources believe a final agreement, worth ?50m (£44.7m/$56.1m) plus bonuses, could be reached in the coming days.

Manchester United have shown an interest in Cancelo but have so far not made a concrete proposal. The club are also interested in Crystal Palace's Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who City did consider signing before approaching Juve for Cancelo.

The Portugal right-back, 25, could therefore become City’s first summer signing, as the club prepare to sell Brazil international Danilo.

The 27-year-old has failed to secure regular first-team football during his two years in Manchester and is the subject of several offers from around Europe.

City have only moved for Cancelo due to Danilo’s expected exit, as they had initially identified just two priority summer transfer targets; a new deep-lying midfielder and a centre-back.

They are waiting for an answer from Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri, who reached a verbal agreement with the Premier League champions before the end of last season but has still not made a final decision on his future.

Atletico have also attempted to sign him to a new contract, while Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also interested.

City are still hopeful that he will choose them, however, and a development could arrive in the coming days.

The Blues also want to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City, but do not want to meet the Midlanders’ valuation of £75m plus add-ons that could total £90m.

Meanwhile, City are ready to make a shock move for Angelino, who they sold to PSV one year ago.

Sources close to the English side insist they can re-sign the 22-year-old left-back for just ?6m.

That is an option they are ready to explore, with a view to using the Spaniard, who initially joined the club in 2012, as a back-up option to Oleksandr Zinchenko and Benjamin Mendy next season.

Joao Cancelo: Man City complete deal for Juventus full-back as Danilo moves other way

Manchester City have completed the signing of Portugal right-back Joao Cancelo from Juventus for £60m.

The agreement sees City full-back Danilo, 28, move in the opposite direction for a fee of £34.1m.

Cancelo, 25, has signed a contract at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2025 and becomes City's third signing of the summer after Angelino and Rodri.

"City are a fantastic club, with a brilliant manager and I am delighted to be here," said Cancelo.

"Everything about them has impressed me, from the facilities, to their style of play.

"I am always looking to develop my game and win trophies and I believe I can do that here, so now I'm really looking forward to the new season and testing myself in the Premier League."

Cancelo, who can play further forward as well as at left-back, joined Juventus from Valencia for £35m in 2018 after a season on loan at Inter Milan.

He was part of the Portugal squad that won the Nations League in June, although he did not play.

City director of football Txiki Begiristain said: "Joao is a fine player and an excellent attacking full-back who will provide us with a real threat on the right-hand side.

"We have been impressed with his progress and have no doubt he can continue to shine here in Manchester.

"He fits the profile of player we want here at Manchester City. His best years are ahead of him, he's technically proficient and has the physical attributes we desire."

City signed Danilo from Real Madrid for £26.5m in 2017, and he made 22 league starts in 60 appearances for the Blues across all competitions.

The Brazilian, who has agreed a five-year contract at Juve, has been involved in back-to-back Premier League title wins under manager Pep Guardiola but has rarely been viewed as a first choice. He becomes City's record sale.

Danilo-Cancelo, the valuations from Juventus and Manchester City: the details

Juventus are still looking to make moves on the transfer market and they are, once again, looking to England for potential players.
Cancelo would be the one who would back his bags, as City are strongly intersted in the player.
Negotiations have reopened, but no deal has been reached because of the different valuations from both clubs.
City believe that Danilo is worth 30 million euros and just under 60 million euros for Cancelo. Meanwhile, Juventus believe that Cancelo is worth 70 million euros and 25 million euros for Danilo.
In summary, there is a difference of 40 million euros in their valuations of the players.
Also, Juventus have not reached an agreement with Danilo, who is on a salary of 5 to 6 million euros. The negotiations will continue Friday and it has the prospects of being a big day.

Manchester City have reopened talks with Juventus over signing the full-back João Cancelo in a transfer which could take Danilo in the opposite direction.

Juventus turned down an offer earlier this summer from City of ?40m (£36.5m) plus Danilo for Cancelo, saying they were interested only in a straight money offer of ?60m, but they are now willing to consider the Brazilian in part-exchange. Talks are ongoing and a meeting is due soon.

Cancelo, a Portugal international, is most comfortable at right-back, although he can also play at left-back and higher up the pitch. He joined Juventus on a five-year contract for ?40.4m last summer from Valencia, having previously played for Internazionale and Benfica.

The 25-year-old would compete with Kyle Walker for the right-back position at City, while having the versatility to fill other roles.

Juventus are also negotiating with Manchester United over a deal which could bring Paulo Dybala to Old Trafford in a swap involving Romelu Lukaku.
