Southampton have accepted a bid from Everton of around £25 million for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, but Tottenham Hotspur are still in the race after also finally tabling an offer of their own.

Tottenham’s bid currently falls short of Southampton’s valuation and, although they are now ready to sell Hojbjerg to Everton, Jose Mourinho has still not given up hope of recruiting the former Bayern Munich midfielder.

Hojbjerg has only one year left on his contract and so could leave for nothing next year, meaning that he will also have some considerable say over his future destination.

The 24-year-old was stripped by manager Ralph Hasenhuttl of the Southampton captaincy and replaced by James Ward-Prowse earlier this summer after deciding that he would not sign a new deal. Spurs emerged as early favourites to sign the Dane but Everton made the first formal bid, of around £18 million, which was rejected last week.

There have since been discussions over a player plus cash deal which could include Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker-Peters converting his loan move to the south-coast club to a permanent transfer. Walker-Peters has been in the Southampton team since the season re-started after making a loan move in January and, although he wants to remain, Southampton would prefer to keep the negotiations separate.

Mourinho will have to raise funds in the transfer market if he wants to make signings during the forthcoming window and Southampton were last night waiting to see if Spurs would now return with a new bid that at least matches Everton's offer.

Spurs have been badly affected by the impact of the coronavirus, which is limiting the changes Mourinho can make, although he will hope to secure moves away for Danny Rose and Juan Foyth. Spurs are reluctant to sell Tanguy Ndombele partly, because they know they cannot demand anywhere near the £63million fee they paid for the midfielder who has figured little under Mourinho.

Losing out on Hojbjerg would be a blow to Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti who is pushing hard for the club to invest this summer as he seeks to overhaul an under-performing team.

Pierre-Emile H?jbjerg says he is “very proud, happy and excited” after joining Tottenham on a five-year deal from Southampton. The 25-year-old midfielder has joined for an undisclosed fee, thought to be an initial £15m, having signalled his desire to work under José Mourinho, and become’s the club’s first summer signing.

A separate £12m deal for the Spurs right-back Kyle Walker-Peters, who spent the second half of last season on loan at St Mary’s, to join the Saints has also been concluded.

H?jbjerg told the Tottenham website: “I’m very proud, very happy, I’m also very excited to be here – I just want to get going, meet everyone and play football.

“I like to bring energy, I like to bring wins – hopefully! From the first moment I got to speak to the people at the club, the coach, I think it was very clear to me that Spurs is a very big club but also a club with even more potential to reach the ultimate, and I wanted so much to be a part of that.

“The leaders and the players that we have, world class. And the coach also, world class.”

H?jbjerg was stripped of the captaincy at Southampton after he informed them he would not be signing a new contract and spent much of the resumption of the 2019-20 campaign out of the side. There was interest from Everton, but the midfielder was keen to work with Mourinho at Spurs, who have got the deal done in an uncharacteristically swift manner.

H?jbjerg arrived in England in 2016 from Bayern Munich, where he worked under Pep Guardiola, and impressed at St Mary’s, soon taking on the armband. But with his contract running out next summer he informed the club he would not be renewing terms and Southampton have now cashed in.

Walker-Peters’s move is a separate transaction as Southampton make his loan into a permanent transfer. The right-back, who helped England to glory in the 2017 Under-20s World Cup, spent the second half of last season on loan with Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team and impressed, prompting the club to pay a reported £12m for his services.

Walker-Peters has signed a five-year contract on the south coast, ending a lengthy stay with Spurs. He joined Tottenham as a youngster but with Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier in front of him in the queue, the defender struggled for game time, making only 24 appearances.

Walker-Peters said: “I’m delighted to have signed here. The last few months on loan have been great for me and a lot of fun, too. I’ve really enjoyed my football, the atmosphere here and also the style of play. The club definitely fits the way I like to play, and I hope that people were able to see that during the last month or so of the season.

“I feel like I’ve already developed in the time I’ve been here and that’s a big part of wanting to stay, too. Obviously it’s a club with a great reputation for improving young players and, personally, I’ve found it really valuable working under the manager, with his ideas on the game and what he expects from you as an individual.”

Tottenham have signed midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton, with full-back Kyle Walker-Peters heading in the opposite direction.

Hojbjerg, 25, has moved for a fee short of Saints' £25m asking price, but well in excess of Tottenham's £15m opening offer.

Walker-Peters, 23, has made a reported £12m move to St Mary's after initially joining on loan in January.

Both players have signed five-year contracts.

Hojbjerg has made 134 appearances and scored five goals since signing for Southampton from Bayern Munich for a reported £12.8m in 2016.

However he was stripped of the club captaincy after refusing to sign a contract extension and was sidelined for much of the remainder of the 2019-20 season after the coronavirus-enforced suspension of action.

Everton were among a number of other sides interested in signing the Denmark international.

Walker-Peters, part of the England under-20 side that won their age-grade World Cup in 2017, leaves Spurs after making 24 first-team appearances.

"The last few months on loan have been great for me and a lot of fun too," he said.

"The club definitely fits the way I like to play, and I hope that people were able to see that during the last month or so of the season."

Tottenham have moved closer to completing the signing of Pierre-Emile H?jbjerg from Southampton after agreeing to pay £15m for the Denmark international.

H?jbjerg, who has one year to run on his Southampton contract, was also the subject of a bid from Everton but it is understood that the former Bayern Munich midfielder has chosen to move to north London to play under José Mourinho. H?jbjerg is now expected to agree personal terms and sign a contract with Spurs in the coming days.

Tottenham are also reported to have accepted a £12m bid from Southampton to sign Kyle Walker-Peters, who spent the second half of last season on loan under Ralph Hasenhüttl.

Inter are still interested in signing Tanguy Ndombele despite Tottenham’s insistence that the France midfielder is not for sale, although whether they will make an official approach depends on whether manager Antonio Conte’s long-term future is resolved in the coming weeks.
