Arsenal have agreed a deal with Lille for Gabriel Magalhães worth around £22m but still face competition from Napoli to sign the Brazilian defender.

The 22-year-old has been linked with several clubs in recent weeks, having initially look set to agree a move to Everton earlier in the year. But while Manchester United have also been credited with an interest, it is understood that Arsenal’s offer of ?24m has been accepted by the French club and Gabriel must now decide whether to move to the Emirates.

The situation is complicated Napoli’s interest in the Brazil Under-20 international, with the Italian club believed to have earmarked Gabriel as a direct replacement for Kalidou Koulibaly should the Senegal international leave. Koulibaly is available for around £75m, with Manchester City believed to be among the clubs who have expressed an interest in the 29-year-old.

Gabriel played in 24 of Lille’s 28 matches in a curtailed 2019-20 Ligue 1 campaign and could follow Nicolas Pépé in moving to the Emirates.

“He is one of the players that we allowed to exit the club this summer, he asked for it and wants to try something else,” said Lille president Gerard Lopez at the weekend.

“We clearly told him what our expectations were, we spoke to a number of clubs, our expectations were met by a number of clubs and we have given him the time to decide.”

Lille have already signed Gent’s Jonathan David as a replacement for Victor Osimhen, who moved to Napoli last month for an initial ?60m.

Gabriel Magalhaes: Arsenal sign Brazilian defender from Lille

Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille for 26m euros (£23.14m).

The 22-year-old, a left-footed centre back, made 34 appearances in all competitions for Lille last season as they finished fourth in Ligue 1.

He joins the Gunners on a long-term contract.

"He is a player we have been studying for a while and he was in demand from many clubs," said Arsenal technical director Edu.

"Gabriel is a player of high quality and Mikel (Arteta) and his coaches are looking forward to integrating him into the club."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said: "We welcome Gabriel to Arsenal. He has many qualities which will make us stronger as a defensive unit and as a team.

"He has proved with Lille he is a defender with many outstanding attributes and we are looking forward to watching him grow as an Arsenal player."

Gabriel said he considered offers from a number of clubs before deciding to join Arsenal.

"It was a very surreal experience, there were offers coming from a few different clubs," he said.

"I spoke a lot with my family and my agents, I also spoke with some of Lille's directors but, as I said, this club's history and traditions and the team project for the next few years were very motivational for my decision to come here.

"So here I am, wearing the Arsenal shirt - I will give my best for it."

The Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhães has agreed to join Arsenal and will fly to London on Monday to complete a move worth up to ?30m (£27m).

Arsenal had been confident of securing Gabriel’s signature after seeing the Ligue 1 side accept their bid last week. Other clubs had been circling, with Napoli showing firm interest while Manchester United and Manchester City monitored the situation, but talks on Saturday brought a decisive breakthrough and Gabriel will sign a five-year deal early this week.

It is Arsenal’s second deal with Lille in consecutive summers, last year’s purchase seeing the forward Nicolas Pépé arrive for a club-record £72m. Gabriel, however, is a 22-year-old defender who joined Lille from the Brazilian club Avai in 2017. After spell on loan at Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb he enjoyed an excellent season in 2019-20, albeit truncated due to Covid-19, and became Arsenal’s top defensive target. He will join William Saliba, the 19-year-old who has returned from his loan back to Saint-Etienne, at the Emirates next season as Mikel Arteta looks to revamp a notoriously unreliable back line.

Arteta still wants to add a midfielder and a forward to Arsenal’s ranks, while he would like Dani Ceballos to join on at least an extra year’s loan from Real Madrid. But Arsenal may have to move players on in order to strengthen further. When Gabriel’s arrival is confirmed, an already swollen set of centre-back options will reach bursting point with Saliba, David Luiz, Pablo Marí, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Sokratis Papastathopoulos all considered first-team players when fit. The latter three all look vulnerable, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles and out-of-favour Matteo Guendouzi are among particularly tradable fringe options in other areas.

The addition of Gabriel will continue an expensive pre-season for Arsenal, who recently completed the signing of Willian and are likely to confirm that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has signed a new contract in the near future. Earlier this month the club proposed 55 redundancies in non-football areas due to drops in revenue associated with Covid-19.

Arsenal are increasingly confident that they have beaten Napoli to the signing of Gabriel Magalhães, the coveted Lille centre-back, and feel optimistic of completing a deal quickly.

The 22-year-old has been the subject of intense interest in recent weeks after an excellent season in Ligue 1, with Manchester City and Manchester United also among those watching developments. But Arsenal and Napoli emerged as frontrunners last week, with the Premier League side having a ?24m (£21.6m) bid accepted and waiting to see whether the Brazil under-20 international would warm to their interest.

An agreement between player and club is now close and Arsenal believe the transfer could be completed soon. Nonetheless there will remain doubts until Gabriel has signed, given the number of clubs in the picture. Napoli would view him as a replacement for Kalidou Koulibaly, who has been linked with City, but Arsenal’s interest and ability to complete the deal are clearer-cut given its lack of dependence on other developments.

While Arsenal hope to welcome Gabriel in the near future, they have said goodbye to one of their assistant coaches, Freddie Ljungberg. The Swede wants to fulfil his long-held ambition of a role in management and all parties have amicably agreed it is in his best interests to move on.

Ljungberg enjoyed a glittering nine-year spell as a player under Arsène Wenger and went on to coach their under-15s. After a spell at Wolfsburg in 2017 he returned to Arsenal the following year. His brief was initially to oversee the under-23s but last summer he became a first-team coach and in November stepped up as caretaker manager for six games after Unai Emery’s dismissal.

While he has remained part of the senior setup under Mikel Arteta, the new manager brought in Steve Round and Albert Stuivenberg to supplement his coaching staff in December. Ljungberg, who is highly rated and has attracted interest from elsewhere, will now seek to exert greater influence as the number one at another club..

Marcos Rojo has confirmed his "bittersweet" return to Manchester United after a frustrating loan spell at Estudiantes.

After falling down the squad pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the first half of the season, Rojo was sent out on loan to his boyhood club in January to get some regular minutes under his belt.

Unfortunately, the combination of an ankle injury and the coronavirus outbreak has restricted the 30-year-old to just one appearance for Estudiantes over the past six months, and he is now set to make his way back to Old Trafford.

Rojo, who still has one year left to run on his current contract with United, revealed earlier this month that he has spoken to Solskjaer about his position at the club.

The Argentine said that although he is expected to report for duty in Manchester ahead of the 2020-21 campaign, he was still hopeful of having his loan in South America extended.

“My idea is also to try to stay at Estudiantes. I played a game, got injured and all of this happened," Rojo told infobae.

However, the experienced full-back has now confirmed his Estudiantes departure in a heartfelt message to his followers on social media, while admitting that his long-awaited return to the club where he began his career was ultimately a failure.
