Everton closing in on permanent deal for Tottenham’s Dele Alli

Everton are closing in on the permanent signing of Dele from Tottenham this afternoon.

Frank Lampard was only officially confirmed as Everton manager today but he wants to revitalise the career of Dele, after a difficult few years for the England midfielder.

Dele has only started eight league games this season — and just seven last campaign — and was made available for transfer in the January window.

Newcastle United were expected to come in for Dele this month but that never materialised.

Lampard, however, is determined to bring Dele to Goodison Park to bring some goals back into his midfield, potentially alongside Donny van de Beek. The Athletic reported on Sunday that the Manchester United midfielder had decided to join Everton on loan, with a deadline day move anticipated.

The move marks the end of Dele's association with Tottenham, seven years after he joined from MK Dons.

He has played 269 games for Spurs and scored 67 goals, as well as winning PFA Young footballer of the year twice.

Everton negotiated an unusual deal with Spurs to sign Alli on a free with £10m payable after 20 appearances. The 25-year-old will be able to make only 18 Premier League appearances this season because he is Cup-tied. With add-ons dependent on team and individual achievements, the eventual fee could rise to about £30m over a two-and-a-half-year contract

Everton have completed the signing of midfielder Dele Alli from Tottenham Hotspur on a two-and-a-half-year contract until the end of June 2024.

The England international, who played 269 times and scored 67 goals for Spurs after joining in February 2015, is new Everton manager Frank Lampard’s first permanent addition – following a loan move for Donny van de Beek from Manchester United on the final day of the January transfer window.

Dele could potentially make his Everton debut in the Premier League fixture at Newcastle United next Tuesday.

The 25-year-old, who is Cup-tied for the weekend meeting with Brentford, has 37 England caps and was an instrumental figure in the Three Lions’ run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

On joining Everton, Dele said: “I’m delighted to have signed for Everton, a huge club with a great fanbase and history.

“I'm eager to get started and can't wait for my first game in an Everton shirt.

“I’m looking forward to helping the team and the opportunity to work with the new manager Frank Lampard."
