HUANG IN TALKS OVER LIVERPOOL

Chinese businessman Kenny Huang hopes to force Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to finally sell up after making an offer to buy the debts of the club's major creditor Royal Bank of Scotland.

It is understood Huang, head of Hong Kong-based investment company QSL Sports Ltd, has been in talks with RBS for some time over repaying the £237million owed to them by the Reds.

Huang's advisors bypassed Liverpool's independent chairman Martin Broughton, brought in to oversee proceedings when Hicks and Gillett announced their decision to sell in April, in order to have a better bargaining position.

Buying RBS's debts would not give Huang immediate ownership of Liverpool but would, according to sources, afford him "a ridiculously large amount of leverage".

Such a deal would see the current owners leave the club without making any profit, having previously valued Liverpool at between £600million and £800million.

Gillett informed RBS last week he was in advanced negotiations with Syrian businessman Yahya Kirdi.

However, this has been viewed as a stalling tactic by Huang, who is keen to press ahead and secure a deal in time for Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson to be able to spend new funds before the current transfer window ends.

If RBS decide to turn down the proposal - and no new viable bidders are forthcoming - the bank has the option of calling in their loan in October.

It would then be classed as "distressed debt" but with the transfer window, by then, having closed Liverpool would be a much less attractive proposition.

Huang, who is backed by one of the wealthiest investment funds in the Far East, was first linked with a buyout at Liverpool two years ago.

He is well known in China for his interests in baseball and basketball, and last year bought a 15% stake in NBA side Cleveland Cavaliers.

Huang is believed to have already spoken to senior figures at Anfield to express his seriousness about a buy-out and in the hope that his message filters down to help persuade top stars like Fernando Torres, who returned to training today after his post-World Cup break, the club does have a better future.

Huang makes Reds offer
Sky Sports News understands the Chinese tycoon Kenny Huang has tabled a formal offer to buy Liverpool.
Sources close to the deal say the bid is less than the club's reported net debt of ₤350million and Huang has financed the deal with a partner who is funded by a sovereign wealth fund in the Far East.
Huang's representatives are in talks with Royal Bank of Scotland and sources close to the businessman say his offer is extremely serious and there is a huge degree of urgency to complete the deal before the transfer window closes on 31st August.
Current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett took over three years ago in a leveraged buyout and owe RBS nearly ₤240m.
Huang, who was first linked with a buyout at Liverpool two years ago, is head of QSL Sports Limited, a Hong Kong-based investment company.
Sources say one of the reasons he is attracted to Liverpool, who have been up for sale since April, is that he sees a commercial operation in the Far East.

Widespread reports in the English press suggest Chinese billionaire Kenny Huang is in negotiations to take charge of Liverpool.

Kenny Huang is said to be on the brink of a hostile takeover

• Cole delighted after debut

Huang, the chief executive of Chinese sports investment company QSL, is said to have lodged a bid to the Royal Bank of Scotland, which would leave the current owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, without profit.

Hicks and Gillett are said to be looking for £600 million but - following the refinancing deal put in place earlier this year - RBS is reportedly able to take control of the sale if it feels it will offer the best chance of repaying its loan. Huang has apparently made a direct offer to repay the £237 million debt.

The Daily Telegraph claims that, as a result of Huang's valuation, Gillett has told the RBS he is in advanced negotiations with Syrian businessman Yahya Kirdi to delay the sale.

Hicks and Gillett put Liverpool up for sale in April but there has so far been little prospect of a deal being completed. A New York-based equity firm earlier made an attempt to purchase a 40% stake, but the bid was dismissed by the duo.

Hicks and Gillett purchased Liverpool for a reported £219 million in 2007 and, speaking in April, Hicks said: "Liverpool will be the most profitable investment I have ever made. I should make four times my money."

The Independent says Fernando Torres "was briefed on the approach some time ago and will be encouraged, on his return to Melwood, to await the outcome of discussions between the tycoon and Royal Bank of Scotland". Torres is keen to see further investment at Anfield.
