NBA Draft 2012: Chicago Bulls contemplate trading Luol Deng for lottery pick

The Chicago Bulls are considering trading small forward Luol Deng for a lottery pick in the June 28 NBA Draft, the Daily Herald is reporting (via HoopsHype).

The Chicago Tribune reported that Bulls met with North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes at the draft combine two weeks ago, but the team likely has other prospects in mind, too, according to the Daily Herald. A shooting guard such as Duke’s Austin Rivers, Connecticut’s Jeremy Lamb or Syracuse’s Dion Waiters may also be of interest.

The motivation to move Deng would be to create salary cap room. Derrick Rose, Carlos Boozer, Joakim Noah and Deng are slated to make $56 million combined next season, and the organization believes that it would have to part with some the team’s depth in order to keep those four starters on the roster.

Since depth is one of the Bulls’ greatest strengths, that’s not something they want to do, the Daily Herald reports. And since finding a team willing to trade for Boozer would be nearly impossible, and since a 7-foot center with Noah’s ability is not easy to replace, the team’s best option may be to trade Deng.

That won’t necessarily be easy, either, as Deng may miss the first few months of the season because of a shoulder injury and has two years and $27.6 million left on his contract.

deng 呢個鐵人, 又攻得又守得, 關鍵時刻仲可以得分的, 咁都trade 走?
bulls 而家我覺得比較需要多一個穩定的得分手

Sources: Rockets, Omer Asik agree

The Houston Rockets have reached a verbal agreement with Chicago Bulls restricted free agent Omer Asik on a three-year deal worth $25.1 million, according to sources close to the talks.

Asik can't formally sign the deal until July 11, which is the first day new players can sign NBA contracts for the 2012-13 season.

The Bulls will then have three days to decide whether to match the offer or let Asik go.

Bulls general manager Gar Forman has made it clear that one of his top priorities was to re-sign Asik, but the structure of the deal could hurt Chicago's ability to keep him. The Bulls are close to the luxury tax and are wary of wading too deep into that territory.

However, Forman said after the draft on Thursday that the Bulls would be making basketball decisions, not financial ones, in reference to the salary cap.

Adding the 7-foot, 255-pound Turkish native would mark the latest move in what has been a busy offseason for the Rockets and general manager Daryl Morey.

The offensively challenged Asik averaged 3.1 points but pulled down 5.3 boards while averaging 14.7 minutes in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season.

Reports: Kirk Hinrich to join Bulls

The two-year deal is for just over $6 million, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing sources.

Ronnie Brewer, C.J. Watson out

The Chicago Bulls will not pick up the $4.37 million option on Ronnie Brewer for the 2012-13 season, Brewer told "The Carmen, Jurko & Harry Show" on ESPN 1000 on Tuesday, and C.J. Watson said goodbye to Bulls fans via Twitter.

"Chi- Town its been real. I appreciate you all. No love lost enjoyed my time in the windy city. Close one chapter open up another," Watson tweeted.

The Chicago Tribune first reported the Bulls told Watson he would not be coming back.

The Bulls must still decide whether to pick up Kyle Korver's $5 million option and whether to match the Houston Rockets' three-year, $25.1 million offer to Omer Asik. The Bulls have not yet received Asik's offer sheet, according to a source familiar with the situation, and they'll have three days to match once the offer is signed.

Brewer became expendable and expensive with 2011 draft pick Jimmy Butler in line for more playing time.

The 6-foot-7 Brewer started 43 games for the Bulls last season as Rip Hamilton battled injuries. Brewer averaged 6.9 points, 2.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds.

"You take the good with the bad," Brewer recently told "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "I liked the situation I was in with the Bulls. I feel like we have a great team. The chemistry was bar none compared to the other teams I've been on. We've had a lot of success, we've won a lot of games in the regular season and had some kind of success in the playoffs."

Watson had a $3.2 million team option for next season and seemed to be a valuable asset to the Bulls, who will be without Derrick Rose for much of next season as he recovers from ACL surgery. But the addition of Kirk Hinrich and the drafting of Marquis Teague priced out Watson.
