Jose Mourinho eyes Man United clear-out; Luke Shaw among exits - sourcesJose Mourinho is planning a summer overhaul of his Manchester United squad which could see as many 10 departures and arrivals at Old Trafford, sources have told ESPN FC.Mourinho's criticism of his players following Saturday's FA Cup quarterfinal victory against Brighton, when he accused some of lacking "class" and "personality," was rooted in his knowledge that he will be given the funds to make wholesale changes to his playing staff at the end of the season.
The United manager believes his squad lacks reliable, experienced quality in all departments and wants to recruit at least four players aged between 25 and 28 to improve his options.
Tottenham full-back Danny Rose and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred are two leading targets and Mourinho continues to be interested in Willian, but accepts that signing the Brazilian from Chelsea will prove difficult, if not impossible, following last summer's capture of Nemanja Matic from Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho also wants to add a winger to his attacking options, having missed out on Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic last summer, while Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane also remains on his radar. While United have the money in place to mount a sustained attack on the transfer market at the end of the season, funds will also be raised by the sales of several players, plus players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the retiring Michael Carrick being released from the Old Trafford wage bill.
United will listen to offers for Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Andreas Pereira, with Chris Smalling, Ander Herrera, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata also facing uncertain futures if Mourinho is able to secure his targets before the start of next season.
And while Mourinho is keen to retain the services of Marouane Fellaini, the Belgium midfielder continues to reject the terms on offer for a new contract at the club and is expected to leave as a free agent at the end of this campaign.Paul Pogba is not expected to sold this summer, despite his recent spell out of the team, with Mourinho believing that the France midfielder is still battling to overcome the hamstring injury which forced him to miss over two months of football during the autumn.
But having signed a contract extension as manager earlier this year, Mourinho is determined to rebuild his squad this summer in order to make the team competitive in the Premier League and Champions League next season and beyond.
He believes that United possess bright young talent in Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay and even Pogba, who turned 25 last week, but Mourinho now feels that his emerging players need better quality and greater experience around them to take them, and the team, to the level required.
