Ryan Giggs is to leave Manchester United, the club he has been with since the age of 14, to pursue his desire to be a manager.

Giggs, 42, has played more times for the club than anyone else in history and is its most decorated player, having won every major honour in club football.

Ryan Giggs said: "After 29 seasons at Manchester United as a player and assistant manager, I know winning is in the DNA of this club - giving youth a chance, and playing attacking and exciting football. It’s healthy to have high expectations, it’s right to expect to win. Manchester United expects, deserves, nothing less.

"This is why it is a huge decision for me to step away from the club that has been my life since the age of 14. It has not been a decision that I have made lightly. I'll take away so many special memories as well as a lifetime of experiences that will, I hope, serve me well in the future.

"However, the time feels right and, although I have no immediate plans to step into management, it is where I want to be.

"I’ve been extremely fortunate in having two great managerial mentors; first in Sir Alex, who I’ve spent the majority of my life working with and learning from and who I believe will remain as football’s greatest-ever manager and in more recent times, Louis van Gaal, whose CV speaks for itself. The knowledge I have gleaned from them has been invaluable.

"I want to reiterate my thanks to the backroom staff and support teams at Manchester United I’ve worked with over the years. The results on the pitch are a reflection of the hard work off it. I would not have achieved the success I have without the dedication, sacrifice and commitment of these people in creating the best environment for the team to succeed.

"I want to congratulate José Mourinho on his appointment as manager of the world’s biggest club. There are only a handful of proven winners at the very highest level and José is unquestionably one of them. I know the fans will welcome him.

"My final thank you is to the fans. I cannot begin to tell you how much I will miss walking out at Old Trafford in front of you. It’s extremely difficult to say goodbye after 29 years. I have loved every minute both as a player and assistant manager. The support you have always shown me has been phenomenal; thank you.

"It’s time for a new chapter and a new challenge. I’m excited about the future - I’ve had the best apprenticeship into management anyone could ever ask for."

Executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward said: "Ryan’s place in the history of Manchester United is assured. He has been a constant presence at the club since 1987 and, during his playing days, regularly delighted crowds; first with his dazzling wing play and later with his intelligence and ability to dictate a game.  

"He has tackled his coaching and management responsibilities with similar rigour and diligence. The experiences and discipline he developed at United will undoubtedly be a big help as he continues to learn his trade. He has all the attributes to be a terrific manager in the future. Everyone at the club wishes him well in his new career. He will be missed but will always be welcome at Manchester United."

Ryan Giggs is set to call time on his Manchester United career after 29 years.
The Welshman has rejected the offer of a reduced coaching role under new manager Jose Mourinho, believing United have gone back on an agreement to give him the top job after he served under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.
Giggs’s representatives are now in negotiations with United over a pay-off for the final year of his contract.

The 42-year-old will start a brief role as an ITV pundit at Euro 2016 on Thursday night but wants to move into club management.
Giggs made a club-record 963 appearances for United after joining the club on his 14th birthday in 1987, and went on to win the Champions League twice, 13 Premier League titles and the FA Cup four times.
It is believed that Giggs has yet to speak directly with Mourinho, who starts work at Carrington with his backroom team on Monday, and a last-ditch attempt to keep the United legend at his only professional club cannot be ruled out.
But Giggs appears to have made up his mind to go after growing disillusioned by how the club has been run in recent years.
He accepts that it will be seen as a gamble, but even prominent figures at United are said to have advised him to leave Old Trafford and further his ambitions elsewhere.
The former Wales midfielder feels the club have gone back on an agreement to give him the manager’s job after he served on the coaching staff under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

When United agreed to let Mourinho bring in his own team, including trusted No 2 Rui Faria, Giggs was offered a lesser role aimed at bridging the gap between the senior squad and academy following talks with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
He was also given the opportunity to suggest other positions he could fill within the club but told that a first-team role was no longer one of the options.
The surprising lack of contact with Mourinho also suggests there is little appetite on the new manager’s behalf to keep a fans’ favourite who made a club record 963 appearances for United.
Giggs joined the club on his 14th birthday in 1987 and went on to win the Champions League twice, 13 Premier League titles and the FA Cup four times.
Giggs spent a fortnight in Dubai last month considering hisfuture and has kept a low profile since then.



However, his decision to work for ITV in France is anindication that he is ready to put himself forward for new opportunities and he is not expected to be at Carrington on Monday morning when Mourinho and his staff arrive.
Although Mourinho and his staff officially take over then, the Portuguese coach has been active for some time lining up transfer targets.
United have already signed defender Eric Bailly for £30million, with free agent Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan expected to follow in the next two weeks as Mourinho sets about rebuilding the squad.
Some of the United players who have not been in action for their countries this summer will return to Carrington on Thursday, but those involved in Euro 2016 and the Copa America will be given three weeks off once they have finished international duty.
Meanwhile, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to seal his move to Old Trafford on Friday. The Swede, 34, will sign a one-year deal after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires.

Manchester United to confirm Ryan Giggs' future in next 24 hours

A decision on Ryan Giggs' future at Manchester United will be announced in the next 24 hours, according to Sky sources, with the assistant manager widely expected to leave after 29 years at the club.

Sky Sports News HQ reported last month that Giggs will leave United this summer due to his strong desire to become a manager.

Jose Mourinho was prepared to offer Giggs a place on his coaching staff but not as assistant manager - the role he served under Louis van Gaal - with that job given to Mourinho's trusted assistant Rui Faria.

Sources believe Giggs was so frustrated at being overlooked in favour of Mourinho, he would rather leave than remain at the club in a lesser role.

Former United centre-half Wes Brown has backed Giggs to succeed as a manager, wherever he ends up.

He told Sky Sports News HQ: "He's Manchester United through and through, but sometimes you have to move on and start somewhere else and if that's the case, I'm sure he'll be great.

"He's definitely got the stature to make it as a manager, but if it's the time to move on and try somewhere else I think that's a good thing.

"He had the best teacher in the business and if he can take anything from that, and knowing the sort of person he is, I'm sure he'll be fine."

And Steve Round, who served as the No 2 at Old Trafford during David Moyes' tenure, believes Giggs' departure could prove to be of real benefit to the club in the long-term.

He told SSN HQ on Thursday: "It's now his opportunity to step out from Manchester United and go and be a manager in his own right. He can take the helm at another club, work on his leadership and build on his managerial experience.

"If he can be a success, and I really hope he can, who's to say in five or six years time he can't come back to Manchester United as an experienced manager who can take them forward post Jose?"
