MANKATO, Minn. (AP)—The Minnesota Timberwolves have signed veteran Bonzi Wells, who hasn’t played in an NBA game since 2008.

Wells signed his contract Thursday, the same day the Timberwolves completed a three-year deal with second-round pick Malcolm Lee.

The 35-year-old Wells earned a reputation as a hothead during his earlier years with the Portland Trail Blazers. But he connected with new Minnesota coach Rick Adelman during stops in Sacramento and Houston, and the Wolves hope he can add some veteran toughness to a very young team.

The 6-foot-5 Wells will provide some much-needed depth at shooting guard for the Timberwolves.

Signing Wells and Lee gives the Wolves 16 players on their roster. That means they will have to make a move with another player before the regular season opens Dec. 26.

Jamal Crawford, Blazers agree

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Free-agent guard Jamal Crawford has decided to join the Portland Trail Blazers.

The deal is for two years and $10 million, with a player option for his second year, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard.

Crawford chose Portland over Sacramento, which was offering a two-year deal worth $6.5 million per season, and New York, which offered $5 million over two years, sources told Broussard.

Crawford, who was reportedly considering Sacramento and the Blazers, announced his choice on Twitter, posting "Rip city!!!"

The Trail Blazers refused to comment because the deal had yet to be formally signed and Crawford's agent could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.

An 11-year veteran, Crawford played for the Atlanta Hawks the last two seasons. For his career, he has averaged 15.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He won the NBA's Sixth Man award in 2010.

Blazers guard Wesley Matthews said he spoke to Crawford on Wednesday night.

"I'm excited about it," Matthews said. "He wants to come and win and that's what we're about."

Crawford, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, will help the Blazers deal with the absence of Brandon Roy, who last week announced his retirement because of knee issues, and Rudy Fernandez, who was traded away on draft night in June.

Matthews said he was unconcerned about potential competition for playing time.

"We can coexist at the same time, similar to what they did in Atlanta with Joe Johnson and him," Crawford said.

It was expected that the Blazers would use the NBA's new amnesty clause to waive Roy, freeing up salary cap space and allowing the team to use a mid-level exemption on Crawford.

Roy, a three-time All-Star who has played all five of his NBA seasons in Portland, had been dogged by pain for the past two years because he lacks cartilage between the bones in his knees.

He sat for stretches of last season because of soreness and had arthroscopic surgery on both knees last January. He returned to end the season with a career-low average of 12.2 points in 47 games.

Roy, a fan favorite who many credit with turning around the team's once-tarnished "Jail Blazers" reputation, finished his career with averages of 19 points, 4.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds.

Coach Nate McMillan praised Roy and his proclivity for late-game heroics after practice on Thursday.

"The closer. That's how I look at him," McMillan said. "The closer has closed."

Crawford is close to Roy, a fellow Seattle native.

Travis Outlaw out, Shawne Williams in

The New Jersey Nets swapped out forwards on Thursday, agreeing to a deal with Shawne Williams and waiving Travis Outlaw through the amnesty clause in the new collective bargaining agreement.

Nets coach Avery Johnson confirmed Thursday that the sharpshooting Williams has chosen New Jersey over the Knicks.

The deal is reportedly for two years and $6.1 million.

"He gives us a guy that can stretch the floor," Nets general manager Billy King said of Williams, who shot 40.1 percent from 3-point range for the Knicks last season. "We were looking at that as we tried to build a team."

Outlaw -- who averaged 9.2 points and shot 38 percent from the field last season -- has four years and $28 million remaining on his contract. The Nets will still have to pay it, but through the amnesty provision they receive salary cap relief by waiving Outlaw.

"I told Travis, it's part of the business. It's the ability to have flexibility," King said. "It has nothing to do with you. I've got to keep as much flexibility for the organization as possible."

Williams, 25, played in 64 games for the Knicks last season, averaging 7.1 points per game on 40.1 percent shooting from 3-point range.

A four-year pro, Williams holds career averages of 5.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

His departure leaves a void on the Knicks' bench. Williams knocked down a career-high 40 percent of his 3-point attempts last season and was a versatile defender.

"Shawne worked really hard last year to get in this position right here so he deserves it," Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony said. "I wish him all the luck. I miss him as a teammate. But he's got to do what he has to do."

Added Amare Stoudemire: "Shawne made a decision that's best for him and his family as far as I'm concerned. We have a solid team with what we have ... so best of luck to him. We'll see him shortly."

The Knicks and Nets play the first of two preseason games on Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Williams was actually traded to the Nets along with Kris Humphries from Dallas in exchange for Eduardo Najera on Jan. 11, 2010. But they waived Williams four days later after he'd been arrested and later pleaded guilty to charges of drug possession. He's also had other issues with the law, which include a previous arrest on charges of drug possession and driving with a suspended license.

Point guard Deron Williams was involved in discussions with Nets' brass to bring in the 6-foot-9, 250-pound Shawne Williams.

"I like having shooters around me," Deron Williams said. "It's always a positive. He's a good pickup for us."

The Nets also love Shawne Williams' versatility. He could also play a stretch power forward position if need be.

Now they'll turn their attention to addressing their need at power forward. Re-signing Humphries could be an option, as may bringing in Deron Williams' former teammate in Utah, Andrei Kirilenko.

"There's not many guys that can fill up a stat sheet like he can across the board," Williams said of AK-47. "He's a versatile player. I think he just took a lot of negative publicity from the size of his contract in Utah, but he was still a great player for us. ... For the right price, he's a bargain."

Williams downplayed the recent news that the Orlando Magic had taken superstar Dwight Howard off the trade market. The Nets were heavily interested in acquiring Howard, but they couldn't meet Orlando ownership's demands.

King would not address the Howard situation, saying he doesn't speak about trade rumors.

Bobcats fill need, sign Williams to two-year deal
Posted Dec 15 2011 10:32AM - Updated Dec 15 2011 4:41PM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Bobcats coach Paul Silas got what he wanted - a long-range shooter.

Charlotte signed shooting guard Reggie Williams Thursday to a two-year contract, filling one of the team's biggest needs. Finanacial terms were not released.

The Bobcats finished 29th among 30 NBA teams in 3-point percentage last season at 32.7 percent. Williams should help. He was eighth in the league in 3-point shooting last season at 42.3 percent while averaging 9.2 points per game for the Warriors.

"Reggie brings outside shooting and that's what we needed," Silas said. "When you're down and trying to get back in the game it really helps you. And it brings the crowd into it."

At the team's media day Tuesday, Silas emphasized he expects the Bobcats to push the ball up the court.

That's not a big surprise.

The Bobcats are heavy on athleticism and light on big men.

What's a little surprising is Silas said he expects to play point guards D.J. Augustin and rookie Kemba Walker on the floor together at certain points during the game. Walker is 6-foot-1 and Augustin is an inch shorter, so the Bobcats would be taking "small ball" to the extreme.

But Silas views them as scorers he needs on the floor and two guys who can push the tempo if they learn to play off each other.

"We are going to run," Silas said. "We're really going to run."

His players know that as well.

That's why several players said they haven't minded spending extra time working on their conditioning.

"Lets' face it, we're not a team that needs to get caught in up in a half-court game," Augustin said.

Silas said the Bobcats have come to training camp with a terrific attitude, a tone set by their new veteran leader Corey Maggette.

Not only is Maggette leading by example off the court, but is also showing how things get done on the floor. Silas said he looked at the shooting numbers which are charted every day by the coaching staff, and said Maggette is making 80 percent of shots - albeit uncontested - during shooting drills.

Maggette's mere presence, he said, has helped the camaraderie following the offseason trade of Stephen Jackson.

"The atmosphere is much better than it was with guys like each other and playing hard and coming together," Silas said. "You just can't have one guy on the other side and everybody else trying to get together. It just doesn't work, especially if that guy is someone who plays."

Silas said he knows many are counting out the Bobcats, but he isn't.

He said while it might take his young team some time to learn his system, he expects them to take off around February or March.

"I think we'll be right there at the end," Silas said. "But it's not going to be easy from the start. But people talk about it being a year from now (but) I think it's going to be this year."

Silas believes that time frame for success can be pushed up if the team can get rookie lottery pick Bismack Biyombo back on the floor.

Biyombo has been working on the side in individual drills but can't participate in team drills until his contract situation is resolved with his former Spanish team Fuenlabrada. Negotiations to free Biyombo from the contract remain at an impasse and may not be settled until after Biyombo's civil suit is heard Dec. 19 in Spain.
But Silas said Biyombo is chomping at the bit.

During a recent conditioning drill, Silas said Biyombo dunked the ball 73 consecutive times before Silas walked over and told to stop. He said normally plays get to 30 or 35 before their legs start to give out and they miss.

"He could have gotten to 100," Silas said with a laugh.

Silas said it's ripped Biyombo apart not to be out playing with his teammates, like looking at a buffet table but not being able to eat.

"He wants it so badly," Silas said. "This is what he's really about - playing and rebounding and going hard all of the time...

"It's been hard for him and us. I want to see him out here and see what he can really do and be able to teach him and get his shot right. Because I think he be a major part of this ball club and us winning. If we don't have him we're not going to be as good of a team."

Knicks sign Jordan, lose out on Crawford, Williams

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Knicks signed center Jerome Jordan on Thursday but lost out on two free agent targets.

Jamal Crawford passed on a return to New York to sign in Portland. Shawne Williams, a Knick last season, signed later Thursday with the New Jersey Nets, who upped their offer after a last-ditch effort by the Knicks to keep him.

The Knicks had only the new two-year exception, worth $2.5 million in the first year, left and were outbid for both players, leaving their bench light on scoring.

Jordan, a second-round pick of Milwaukee in 2010 whose rights the Knicks acquired for cash, is the second 7-footer New York added this offseason.

Jordan set the Conference USA career record for blocked shots while playing at Tulsa. He then spent parts of the past two seasons playing in Serbia before a buyout of his contract was arranged.

Jordan took part in his first practice Thursday and hopes for minutes behind newcomer Tyson Chandler, who helped Dallas win the NBA championship last season before agreeing to a four-year deal worth about $56 million in New York.

Free agent G Crawford heading to Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Free-agent guard Jamal Crawford has joined the Portland Trail Blazers.

Crawford, who was reportedly considering Sacramento and the Blazers, announced his choice on Twitter, posting “Rip city!!!”

The Blazers made it official a few hours later on Thursday when they announced they had signed Crawford. The terms of the two-year deal were not released.

In order to make a deal with Crawford, the team used the NBA’s new amnesty clause to waive All-Star guard Brandon Roy, who announced his retirement last week because of ongoing knee problems.

The Blazers also on Thursday agreed to terms with free-agent forward Craig Smith, known as “The Rhino,” who played with the Los Angeles Clippers for the past two seasons.

An 11-year veteran, Crawford played for the Atlanta Hawks the last two seasons. For his career, the 31-year-old has averaged 15.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He won the NBA’s Sixth Man award in 2010.

“We’ve thought highly of Jamal for a long time and think he’s a great fit for our team,” said Chad Buchanan, Portland’s acting general manager. “He brings a scorer’s touch and veteran leadership that will help us immediately.”

Blazers guard Wesley Matthews said he spoke to Crawford on Wednesday night.

“I’m excited about it,” Matthews said. “He wants to come and win and that’s what we’re about.”

Crawford, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, will help the Blazers deal with the absence of Roy and former Blazer Rudy Fernandez, who was traded away on draft night in June.

Matthews said he was unconcerned about potential competition for playing time.

“We can coexist at the same time, similar to what they did in Atlanta with Joe Johnson and him,” Matthews said.

Terms of the deal with Smith, a five-year veteran, were not disclosed. Expected to join the team on Friday, Smith averaged 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 48 games with the Clippers.

By using amnesty to waive Roy, the Blazers freed up salary cap space that allowed the team to use a mid-level exception on Crawford. Roy, who was under a max contract, was set to make $15 million this year.

“Brandon’s announcement that he is leaving the game ultimately shifted our decision to amnesty,” Buchanan said in a statement. “We’re given the immediate option to obtain additional salary cap flexibility as we will no longer be in the Luxury Tax—something that is critical to improving our team and helping us recover from the loss of a player of Brandon’s caliber.”

A three-time All-Star who has played all five of his NBA seasons in Portland, Roy had been dogged by pain for the past two years because he lacks cartilage between the bones in his knees.

He sat for stretches of last season because of soreness and had arthroscopic surgery on both knees last January. He returned to end the season with a career-low average of 12.2 points in 47 games.

Roy, a fan favorite whom many credit with turning around the team’s once-tarnished “Jail Blazers” reputation, finished his career with averages of 19 points, 4.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds.

Coach Nate McMillan praised Roy and his proclivity for late-game heroics.

“The closer. That’s how I look at him,” McMillan said. “The closer has closed.”

Crawford is close to Roy, a fellow Seattle native.

Buchanan told reporters Thursday afternoon that Roy will always have a place in the organization.

“If there’s any role that he wanted to take on moving forward, we would love to have him in any capacity … there’s always going to be a place for Brandon in this organization,” Buchanan said. “And at some point he’ll probably consider and look into all of his options and what he wants to do now that he’s done playing. We just want to make sure that he knows he always has a home with us.”

The Blazers also announced that forward LaMarcus Aldridge had been cleared to return to non-contact practice starting on Saturday.

Aldridge underwent a procedure last Friday to treat for Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, a condition which causes the ventricles of the heart to contract prematurely.

Aldridge was diagnosed with the disorder in 2007. He had a similar procedure at the time, and missed the final nine games of the 2006-07 season.

The 6-foot-11 forward from Texas averaged 21.8 points and 8.8 rebounds last season, the best of his five-year NBA career. He had 36 double-doubles.
