Chris Ramsey is expected to be named manager of QPR until at least the end of the season, according to Sky sources.

Ramsey has been in temporary charge since Harry Redknapp’s resignation and guided the R’s to their first away win of the campaign at Sunderland on Tuesday evening.

Former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood was initially linked with the Loftus Road post

but Amy Lewis of Sky Sports News HQ said: “Negotiations broke down at the last minute because the two parties could not agree on the details in the contract.

“We are told the club were also interested in (former Swansea) boss Michael Laudrup.

“However, Laudrup told us he will be staying in Qatar until the end of the season, although he was flattered by the interest.

“It is now looking increasingly likely that it is Chris Ramsey who will be named QPR manager until the end of the season.”

Redknapp resigned last week due to his need for knee surgery and Ramsey, who had been working as head of player development, took charge on an interim basis.

He lost his first match at the helm when Southampton scored in injury-time to win 1-0 at Loftus Road last Saturday

but then masterminded a much-improved away showing on Tuesday night, as the Londoners won 2-0 at the Stadium of Light to climb out of the relegation zone.

And Ramsey has been open about expressing his interest in taking charge on a more permanent basis.

He said after the game on Tuesday: “If the job’s available and I’m the right man for the job, then I’ll do it.

“If not, I’ll stay as an employee – head of player development – for the club and continue to support the cause.”

Talks between Tim Sherwood and QPR about becoming manager at Loftus Road have ended.

Sherwood was the clear frontrunner after being contacted by the club following the resignation of Harry Redknapp, but negotiations with the ex-Spurs boss have come to a halt.

Real Madrid assistant manager Paul Clement and Brentford's Mark Warburton have been linked with the position.

Former Swansea manager Michael Laudrup is not being considered for the role.

Laudrup is currently managing Qatari side Lekhwiya and had been the bookmakers' favourite, but is not in the running.

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes believes he has identified the "dream manager" - but has not revealed who that is. He said there was "still a bit to go" to complete the deal.

Sherwood had sought assurances over the club's future plans and expressed concern about the impact relegation from the Premier League might have, with the club potentially facing a £54m Football League fine or a transfer embargo for breaching financial fair play rules in their promotion season.

Academy coach Ramsey and director of football Les Ferdinand took temporary charge after Redknapp, 67, stepped aside on 3 February, saying imminent knee replacement surgery was going to stop him giving 100% to the job.

The club now have a 10-day break following their first away victory of the season at Sunderland.

When asked to comment about being among the favourites for the QPR manager's job, Brentford boss Warburton told BBC Sport: "Bookmakers get many, many things wrong - that's all I can say.

"It would be totally disrespectful to this squad of players, to this club and to the fans and disrespectful to QPR as well - and they've got people that I know in situ at the moment, really good people, so that would be totally disrespectful.

"My only focus is Brentford Football Club."

Sky Sports sources now expect Chris Ramsey to be appointed interim Queens Park Rangers manager in the coming days.

Ramsey will be given 13 games to save the R's from the Premier League drop, starting against relegation rivals Hull at the KC Stadium on February 21.

QPR spoke to Derby boss Steve McClaren and former Spurs chief Tim Sherwood about the vacant position, the latter's offer falling down over personal terms.

Talks were also held with Real Madrid assistant Paul Clement, who was the "dream" manager Tony Fernandes was referring to in midweek on social media.

Discussions with Marseille boss Marcelo Bielsa were unsuccessful while there was only ever initial talks with Michael Laudrup’s representatives.

Sky Sports News HQ reporter Amy Lewis said: "There's been a bit of a hold up because of the logistics in getting everyone together to actually formalise things and get things signed.

"I'm told there's no problems overall. Their hoping to announce it either at the weekend or on Monday.

"All of this, of course, follows Harry Redknapp's resignation last week. No announcement expected today but in the next couple of days."

Chris Ramsey confirmed as QPR head coach until end of season



QPR have confirmed the appointment of Chris Ramsey as head coach until the end of the season.

The club's former head of player development is promoted in the wake of Harry Redknapp's resignation and will be assisted by Kevin Bond and Kevin Hitchcock.

Les Ferdinand, recently made director of football at Loftus Road, will oversee the three coaches and a QPR statement said he will have "a presence on the training ground for the remainder of the campaign".

"This is a great privilege and an honour for me," said Ramsey, who took charge for Rangers' first away win of the season at Sunderland in midweek. "I am excited about leading the club between now and the end of the season.

"I will still be involved in the running of the Academy for the rest of this season and beyond. Continuity is very important when it comes to the development of young players, which is something I am very mindful of."

Sky sources understand QPR owner Tony Fernandes considered five candidates for the permanent job - including a "dream" target thought to be Real Madrid assistant boss Paul Clement - before settling on Ramsey in the short-term.

Fernandes told the club website: "A lot has been written and said about the position, including by myself, but the decision has been taken to defer the permanent appointment until the end of the season.

"We spoke to many individuals who were interested in the role, one of whom I was quoted on as being a dream, but none of them were right to take the club forward at this time for a variety of reasons, whereas we firmly believe Chris is.

"We are keen for the position to be a long-term appointment that will play a major role in shaping the future on-field progression of QPR. For that reason, it is vitally important that we get the right individual."

Ferdinand said: "I’ve been liaising closely with the Board over the last week or so regarding the position and it became apparent that Chris is the best man for the job at this time.

"He will have a huge part to play in the long-term future of this club at all levels, and we are confident that Chris, supported by the backroom staff, will be able to deliver our goal of Premier League survival."

Rangers are outside the Premier League's bottom three on goal difference only and go to Hull - one place and one point above - in their next game on February 21.

Chris Ramsey close to new QPR deal

Queens Park Rangers are expected to announce that Chris Ramsey has agreed a new contract at the end of the season.

It is understood Ramsey is close to signing a new deal to remain as manager, regardless of whether QPR stay in the Premier League.

Sky sources say the club’s immediate focus is on the remaining three games, and securing Premier League survival.

The club has declined to comment.
