Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku transfer on hold with Mourinho ready to give striker chance to prove himself
Blues' manager wants to see Belgian who has been loaned out for all of the past two seasons in friendly action before deciding on his future
Jose Mourinho is ready to block Romelu Lukaku’s exit from Chelsea – as he wants to see the striker in -action -during their training camp, writes Neil Moxley in the Sunday People.
The Portuguese is keen to monitor just how far the Belgium striker has come during his season on loan at Everton and will offer him a second chance.
That means the Stamford Bridge boss is set to disappoint the Toffees and German club Wolfsburg who were both plotting a £20million raid for the forward.
Lukaku updated his -status on social media on Saturday, adding in his -biography that he is a Chelsea player – a hint he will stay in -London.
The west Londoners depart on a European tour on Monday and, -according to -assistant coach Steve Holland, Lukaku will be involved.
Holland said: “The plan is that Romelu will join up with us at some stage during the second week when we are in Holland.”
Asked whether that means Lukaku is staying put until a decision over his future has been taken, Holland -replied: “That’s the situation as I understand it.”
Lukaku is not the only player who could be set to stay – Thibaut Courtois also updated his status.
It is clear Mourinho will look at a string of fringe players during the two-week trip before deciding their futures.
But there was no still no sign of Petr Cech at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, where Chelsea beat AFC Wimbledon in a friendly - the keeper is -still recovering from last season's shoulder -injury.
Holland added: “Petr is making very good progress. He’s ahead of schedule. He’s well on course and it won’t be too long before he joins in with the rest of the group.”
Mourinho saw a team worth £53m – which included Kurt Zouma, Mohamed Salah, Marco van Ginkel and Nemanja Matic – deservedly fall two goals behind at the interval.
A firm header from Dons’ defender Alan Bennett found its way past Mark Schwarzer after just 38 seconds.
Matt Tubbs’ penalty shortly before the interval left it to the Blues’ -second-half team to salvage the situation.
And it was club skipper John Terry who sparked the comeback in the 74th minute, firing in from close range before Salah levelled.
Terry nodded home a corner in the dying seconds from Lewis Baker’s third assist of the -day to seal the win.
Holland added: “John has that match--winning ability and even in a game like today that is important.”
