Didier Drogba: Chelsea re-sign club legend on free transfer

Striker Didier Drogba has re-signed for Chelsea on a one-year deal.
The Ivorian, 36, won 10 trophies at Chelsea from 2004 to 2012 and was a free agent after leaving Galatasaray.
Manager Jose Mourinho had earlier said the striker "belongs" at Stamford Bridge - but said any deal would be made "in a non-emotional way".
Drogba told Chelsea's official site:  "It was an easy decision - I couldn't turn down the opportunity to work with Jose again."
Drogba, who joined Chelsea from Marseille for £24m in July 2004,
won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups and a Champions League during his spell at Stamford Bridge.
He left the club in 2012 after scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.



After a brief spell at Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua,
Drogba joined Galatasaray in January 2013 and scored five goals in 13 league games as the Turkish club won the title.
The following season, the striker netted 10 times in 32 games as Galatasaray reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League -
where they lost to Chelsea - and finished as runners-up to Fenerbahce in the Turkish league.
The Ivory Coast international was voted Chelsea's greatest ever player in a poll of fans in 2012 and has spoken of his close ties to the Blues.

Mourinho previously said: "Because we know his heart is pushing him to where he feels he belongs,
we are thinking about the possibility [of a deal]. We feel that Didier belongs to us."
Mourinho, who managed Drogba from 2004 to 2007, said any decision would be based on the player's ability, rather than his history with the club.
The Portuguese said: "If you bring him back it is not because he is Didier or scored the most important goal in the history of Chelsea, or because I read I need an assistant, no.
"We want to win matches and win titles and Didier is one of the best strikers in Europe.
He is still very adapted to the needs of the Premier League and we are thinking about it in a non-emotional way."
Mourinho also intimated that Drogba, who made one start and two substitute appearances during the Ivory Coast's three games at the 2014 World Cup, would be a squad player.
He joins Fernando Torres, new signing Diego Costa, as well as Romelu Lukaku and Victor Moses, who both spent last season out on loan, as striking options at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba could return to Chelsea



Sky sources understand that moves are afoot to bring former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba back to Stamford Bridge next season, possibly in a player-coach role.

Drogba, who is out of contract following a stint with Turkish side Galatasaray, reportedly has a lucrative two-year contract offer on the table from Italian champions Juventus.

But the Ivorian, who scored 157 goals in 341 appearances for Chelsea, is said to be leaning towards returning to London to once again work under Jose Mourinho.

The 34-year-old remains the only player in history to have scored in four FA Cup finals and is idolised by the club’s fans.

Mourinho signed Drogba for £24m from Marseille in 2004 and together the pair won six major trophies including the Premier League in their first season, Chelsea’s first top-flight title in 50 years.

Drogba went on to win another six trophies after Mourinho left the club in 2007, including the Champions League.

Chelsea have already completed the signing of another striker in Diego Costa, who completed a £32m transfer from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid earlier this week.

But Samuel Eto’o has already left the club following the expiry of his contract while another striker, Demba Ba, completed a £5m move to Besiktas on Friday.

Romelu Lukakau, who spent last season on-loan at Everton, has been linked with a move away while Fernando Torres has failed to convince in a Chelsea shirt since his £50m  move from Liverpool in 2011.

Striker Didier Drogba is considering a one-year deal to return to Chelsea.
The Ivory Coast international, a free agent after leaving Galatasaray,
left Stamford Bridge in 2012 after scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
Drogba's representatives say a decision has not yet been made and that Chelsea is one of a number of options.
But talks are under way and the 36-year-old is likely to decide on a possible return this week.
Drogba was part of the Ivory Coast squad at the 2014 Fifa World Cup.
He made one start and two substitute appearances as his country were eliminated at the group stage after winning one of their three games.

Drogba, who joined Chelsea from Marseille for £24m in July 2004, won three Premier League titles,
four FA Cups, two League Cups and a Champions League during his first spell at Stamford Bridge.
He was on the losing side when the Blues beat Galatasaray in the last 16 of last season's Champions League.
Before the second leg of that tie, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said Drogba was "still one of the best strikers in the world".
Drogba still has close links to London and, during an interview with BBC Sport in February, said: "When you're happy at a club, you want to stay forever.
"But sometimes you can't do everything you want to do. I am proud of what I achieved.
"You don't stay eight years in a place you don't like, especially in football."

Reports in recent days have linked the Cote d'Ivoire striker, a free agent after leaving Galatasaray, with a return to Stamford Bridge.
And Mourinho has now broken his silence on the matter, telling several national newspapers: "We think about it.

"We want to win matches and win titles and Didier is one of the best strikers in Europe.
He is still very adapted to the needs of the Premier League and we are thinking about it in a non-emotional way."

Drogba was named as Chelsea's greatest ever player in a poll of fans in 2012,
having scored both the equaliser and the decisive shoot-out penalty as the Blues beat Bayern Munich in that year's UEFA Champions League final.

But Mourinho stressed: "If you bring him back it is not because he is Didier or scored the most important goal in the history of Chelsea, or because I read I need an assistant, no.
If I bring him back, and the decision has to be made soon, it is because as a player he has qualities to make the team stronger.

"The team is not about the eleven. It is about the different options and with Didier's profile, being a squad player I think he could be important for any team.

"And because we know his heart is pushing him to where he feels he belongs, we are thinking about the possibility.
(Chelsea owner Roman) Abramovich is very intelligent and he feels that people belong to the club. We feel that Didier belongs to us.

"Is he coming back as a player one more year or a couple more years? Let's see."

Didier Drogba will re-join Chelsea in the next few hours, Sky Sports News understands.

Jose Mourinho said on Thursday that he was considering bringing Drogba back to Stamford Bridge – and that move will happen this afternoon, we understand.

Drogba scored over 150 goals during an eight-year spell at Chelsea before leaving for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua two years ago.

The 36-year-old has spent the past 18 months in Turkey with Galatasaray, but is now a free agent and has been linked with Juventus, in addition to a return to Chelsea.

Mourinho insisted that he would not let his heart rule his head when making a decision on Drogba,

but he does believe the Ivory Coast forward could be a good squad option to have at his disposal.

"We want to win matches and win titles and Didier is one of the best strikers in Europe and still very adapted to the needs of the Premier League,” said Mourinho on Thursday.

"We are thinking about it in a non-emotional way.

If we bring him back it is not because he is Didier or scored the most important goal in the history of Chelsea football or because, as I have read somewhere, I need an assistant. No.

"If I bring him back - and the decision has to be made soon, because I want to close the dressing-room door - it is because as a player he has certain qualities to make the team stronger.

"With Didier's profile, being a squad player he could be important for any team.

And because we know his heart is pushing him to where he feels he belongs, and because our boss has this big feeling towards him, we are thinking about the possibility.

"We feel that Didier belongs to us. Is he coming back as a player for one more year or a couple more years? Let's see what is going to happen.

"The team is not about the XI, it is about the different options, and as an option I would not say no about the possibility of Didier.

"It is the position where it is more common that the player who starts the game doesn't finish. It is easier to have them all motivated and all happy in a certain way.

"Exactly because of that, the striker's position is not the one where the manager does not have two players for one position. We have three or four options."

Drogba of course needs no introduction.

When he came to the end of his previous contract in 2012 it was only weeks after he had stroked the ball

from the penalty spot into the Bayern Munich net to place Chelsea on top of the European summit for the first time.

His earlier equalising header in that Champions League final was his 157th goal in 341 appearances, a total placing him fourth in the club's all-time highest-scorer list.

On signing his contract, Drogba said: ‘It was an easy decision - I couldn't turn down the opportunity to work with Jose again.  

Everyone knows the special relationship I have with this club and it has always felt like home to me.

‘My desire to win is still the same and I look forward to the opportunity to help this team. I am excited for this next chapter of my career.’

I know his personality very well and I know if he comes back he’s not protected by history or what he’s done for this club previously.

He is coming with the mentality to make more history.’

His 34 goals in European competition remains a Chelsea record, as do his nine strikes in nine cup finals.

During the Ivorian’s first eight years with the club, Drogba won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups as well as the Champions League triumph.

He has been named Chelsea's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year and has won the Premier League Golden Boot twice.

Since leaving Chelsea in 2012 he has played for Shanghai Shenhua and Galatasaray,

memorably making a return to Stamford Bridge last season when we beat the Turkish club in the Champions League Round of 16.

He has continued his international career and appeared in all three of Ivory Coast’s games at the World Cup, taking his caps total to 104 with 64 goals scored.
