Newcastle refuse to get into bidding war for Cabella

NEWCASTLE United are refusing to get involved in a bidding war with Montpellier over the services of Remy Cabella.

The French winger remains one of the Magpies’ main summer targets as they look to add more creativity to their team.

Cabella has been at the top of a hitlist compiled by chief scout Graham Car and manager Alan Pardew since Yohan Cabaye was sold to Paris St Germain for £20m in January.

United had hoped to have the signing in place before the World Cup as they look to get their transfer business done early this summer.

Ayoze Perez has already been confirmed as the first acquisition of the close season, while Jack Colback is expected to be announced as a Newcastle player this week.

But any hopes of bringing in Cabella quickly have been dashed by Montpellier rejected their opening bid, and also the 24-year-old’s call-up into the France national squad for the World Cup.

Montpellier chairman Louis Nicollin has admitted he is delighted he turned down the Magpies’ bid for Remy Cabella – and expects the schemer’s price to rise, especially if he has a good tournament.

United slapped in a eight million euros (£6.5m) offer for Cabella last month, with the French club demanding almost double that.

But Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has shown in the past that he won’t pay over the odds for a player, and that once the club has a valuation in mind they won’t go beyond it.

However, managing director Lee Charnley is expected to return with an improved offer for Cabella, though any deal is now likely to be put on hold until after the World Cup.

Cabella had been on the standby list, but an injury to Franck Ribery meant he replaced him in the squad, and has jetted out to Brazil.

“I’m happy (for Cabella’s call-up), because he’s a great kid,” Nicollin said.

“This shows the quality of our academy. It is highly probable that I’ll go see all the national team’s games.

“I’m happy I didn’t sell him ?8m to Newcastle.”

Newcastle United are edging closer to securing top target Remy Cabella in what would be the club’s biggest transfer for years.

French sources told the Chronicle last night that Montpellier were considering a bid of close to £12million for the talented 24-year-old playmaker.

The French club’s president Louis Nicollin has already knocked back and indeed publicly ridiculed a first Newcastle bid of £7.5m.

And while Nicollin’s eccentricity makes any supposed deal more complicated than it need be,

he would surely find it impossible to turn down that kind of money for a player who will definitely leave this summer.

If a deal can be done over the next few days, it would prove that Mike Ashley is ready to spend big to strengthen the first-team squad.

Montpellier and Newcastle have found an agreement for the transfer of Remy Cabella. "We have a deal" said Laurent Nicollin, club's CEO.

Montpellier Chairman Louis Nicollin has told our colleagues at ML Actu that he has found an agreement with Newcastle to sell them Remy Cabella.

Newcastle have agreed a structured deal which could rise to as high as ?16m, if bonuses are met. The player is currently on holiday in Corsica, and has yet to agree personal terms with Newcastle. His holiday is expected to be cut short so that he can travel to England to try and complete his move to the club.

Transfer news: Newcastle agree fee with Montpellier for Remy Cabella



Newcastle have agreed a fee with French club Montpellier to sign midfielder Remy Cabella, according to Sky sources.

The Magpies have been chasing the 24-year-old France international since January when they attempted to sign him as a replacement for Yohan Cabaye.

Cabella has been with Montpellier for five years and was a member of France’s World Cup squad in Brazil.

The deal is expected to be completed over the weekend.

Transfer news: Newcastle close in on Remy Cabella transfer



Montpellier coach Rolland Courbis has confirmed that the club are close to agreeing a deal with Newcastle for their midfield star Remy Cabella.

The 24-year-old midfielder is set to become Newcastle's latest signing, as they finally close in on a player they have been tracking for over 12 months.

Cabella has never hidden his desire to move to St James' Park and he is now in line to become the latest Frenchman to move to Tyneside.

"Discussions with Newcastle exist, and we are not far from an agreement - the two clubs will announce the deal as soon as possible.

"It is not completed, but I know it is on track and the negotiations continue, but the final sum is not certain -

with bonuses etc you can never be certain but we know 99.9 per cent of what we will get.

"You can never predict anything, will it rain in Newcastle in October or will Christmas be in December - we will manage to get some extras in -

but with Loulou [president Louis Nicollin] you will never learn how he does his negotiations - so the outcome won't concern me too much."

The Montpellier coach praised his president in the way he had rejected earlier bids from Newcastle.

"He has been skilled to refuse offers, their offers [from Newcastle] were a bit upsetting knowing the price they earned from Cabaye

and we know Debuchy is perhaps being transferred for at least 10 million, so to get offered eight for Cabella was a little annoying.

"They are now closer to the amount Loulou wants and I think it will definitely end in the coming days, it is 80 to 90 per cent done, but not 100 per cent."

It is understood Montpellier was at least ?10million for Cabella, who has two years left on his current deal.

Newcastle fly to New Zealand next week for a pre-season tour, and it is understood that Cabella could be one of six new faces on board their flight.

Siem De Jong, Ayoze Perez and Jack Colback have already signed, and Cabella will join them, as could Dutch full-back Daryl Janmaat and French striker Emmanuel Riviere.

Cabella set to complete Newcastle move

France international Remy Cabella has arrived on Tyneside as Newcastle attempt to push home their long-standing interest in the player.

Press Association Sport understands the Montpellier midfielder was in the city on Sunday evening 48 hours

after it emerged that the two clubs were close to reaching agreement over his transfer.

Manager Alan Pardew will hope for a positive result after Cabella cut short his holiday to travel to England.

He would become the club's fourth summer signing after Siem de Jong, Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez, but perhaps the most eagerly-anticipated to date.

The Magpies targeted Cabella in January after selling Yohan Cabaye to Paris St Germain, but were unable to reach an agreement with Montpellier.

However, all the indications they have had from the player since then have been positive and there is optimism on Tyneside that they can finally get their man.
