Ronald Koeman: Southampton name Dutchman as new manager



Southampton have appointed Ronald Koeman as their new manager.
The former Dutch international has agreed a three-year deal to replace Mauricio Pochettino who took over at Tottenham last month.
Koeman resigned from his job at Feyenoord last month after guiding the club to second place in the Eredivisie.
It is thought the 51-year-old will recruit his brother Erwin  as his assistant after he left his coaching role at RKC Waalwijk.

Koeman already has a list of players he would like to bring to St Mary's, with BBC Radio Solent reporting Feyenoord midfielder Lex Immers, 28, as his top transfer target.
However, keeping players at the club will be one of his immediate challenges with defenders Luke Shaw
and Dejan Lovren as well as midfielder Adam Lallana the subject of interest elsewhere.
Koeman will discover his first opponents in English football on Wednesday when the 2014-15 Premier League fixtures are released.
The search for Argentine Pochettino's replacement had been led by Les Reed, the executive director at St Mary's.

Koeman's honours as a player include winning the 1988 European Championship with the Dutch national team,
the European Cup - now the Champions League - with PSV Eindhoven in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992, and domestic league titles in the Netherlands and Spain.
He played 763 games for club and country, scoring 253 goals - including the winner for Barcelona against Sampdoria in the 1992 European Cup final at Wembley.
His managerial career has taken in spells at Vitesse, Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia and AZ Alkmaar, before he joined Feyenoord in July 2011.

Southampton hopeful on Koeman deal



Southampton are hoping for more talks with Dutch legend Ronald Koeman in the coming days as they look to fill their managerial vacancy, sources have told ESPN.
Koeman and his advisers have staged initial discussions with the south coast club, with Saints officials believed to have been impressed
by the former PSV Eindhoven and Valencia boss as they continue their search to find a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino, who joined Tottenham last month.

Reports suggested Tim Sherwood was emerging as another potential candidate to replace the man who took his job at Tottenham,
but it seems that Koeman remains the front-runner for the Saints hotseat.
One of the first tasks for the next Southampton manager will be resolving the futures of a host of the club's star names,
with Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Luke Shaw among those being linked with high profile transfers this summer.

Having sold Rickie Lambert to Liverpool, Southampton are keen to avoid concluding any more transfer business until they have their new manager in place,
with the availability of a high profile candidate such as Koeman - following his departure from Feyenoord last month -
and his eagerness to work in the Premier League making him an attractive prospect.

Premier League: Les Reed reveals Southampton are close to naming their new boss

Southampton executive director Les Reed has revealed the club are close to announcing a high-calibre


managerial appointment to replace Mauricio Pochettino who left the club to take over at Spurs last month.

Pochettino replaced Nigel Adkins as Southampton manager last year and guided the south coast club to eighth position in the Premier League in his first full season in charge.

The Argentinean’s departure for Spurs has left a void at Southampton but Reed insists Southampton fans can look forward to an exciting appointment sooner rather than later.

Dutchman Ronald Koeman, Hull City boss Steve Bruce along with former Swansea manager Michael Laudrup,


ex-Celtic boss Neill Lennon and former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood have all been linked with the vacant manager's job.

“We are closing in now on our preferred candidate,” Reed told Southampton’s YouTube channel.

“When it was actually announced that Mauricio was leaving we were inundated with enquiries but by and large we were amazed by the level of applicant who wanted to show interest in the job,

“We had possibly six to 10 candidates on our ongoing research list.


We were delighted that by the time we got down to the final four, all four of them had been on our list originally.

“Things are going well and I’m hoping – what takes time with these things is the paperwork – but I’m hoping that we can get that sorted very quickly

and the fans will be excited about an announcement coming up sooner rather than later.”

Reed insisted it is an exciting time for Southampton with the club set to open a brand new multi-million pound training facility next month

and revealed the club are close to announcing two prestige pre-season friendlies.

He added: “We’ve got two marquee fixtures against European clubs one away from home

and one at home which we are just about finalising the details now so we’ll be able to announce that soon as well.”

Southampton are close to announcing former Netherlands defender Ronald Koeman as their new manager.
The Premier League club are expected to make an announcement this week following the departure of former boss Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham.
Koeman, 51, led Feyenoord to second place in the Eredivisie last season, but left at the end of the campaign.
He may opt to recruit his brother Erwin  as his assistant after he also left his coaching role at RKC Waalwijk.
The search for Argentine Pochettino's replacement has been led by Les Reed, the executive director at St Mary's.
Saints chairman Ralph Krueger had earlier told BBC Radio Solent that the managerial vacancy had attracted "huge interest".
He said on 28 May, after Pochettino's departure: "We have the highest-quality managers in Europe knocking on our door."
