Chris Lepkowski from the Birmingham Mail has told Sky Sports News Radio that Nicolas Anelka has not retired from football after walking out of training today at West Brom.

He’s been given compassionate leave by the club. He has a close knit group of agents and advisers and we understand one of them has died.
He was in no fit state to train today, he did leave training but there was no threat of retirement. Not only the football but also living here,
we fit in here and that's important for me.

Nicolas Anelka: West Brom striker given compassionate leave




Striker Nicolas Anelka has been given indefinite compassionate leave by West Bromwich Albion following the death of his agent Eric Manasse.
Anelka, who joined the Baggies in the summer, made his competitive debut in Saturday's 1-0 defeat by Southampton.

But the 34-year-old Frenchman will sit out Saturday's game at Everton, with reports he is considering retirement described as premature.
Meanwhile, Albion have signed Scott Sinclair on loan from Manchester City.
The 24-year-old winger will spend the rest of the season at The Hawthorns after failing to secure regular first-team football following his move to the then-Premier League champions in August 2012.
The much-travelled Anelka, capped 69 times, joined his sixth Premier League club when signing a one-year deal with West Brom in July.
He claimed Premier League titles with Arsenal and Chelsea and has also played for Liverpool, Manchester City and Bolton.
The striker also won the Champions League in 2000 with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

West Brom boss Steve Clarke hopes Nicolas Anelka reconsiders wish to retire



West Brom manager Steve Clarke has confirmed Nicolas Anelka has told him he wants to quit football, but is still hopeful the striker will reconsider his decision.

Anelka, 34, has been granted compassionate leave by the club following the death of his agent Eric Manasse last weekend and will miss
Saturday's Premier League game at Everton.

The Frenchman left training early on Thursday, prompting reports he had walked out on the club he only joined last month following a short spell with
Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua.However, Albion quickly issued a statement saying Anelka had left with their blessing and Clarke clarified the situation
at his Friday morning press conference.

"Obviously Nicolas lost a close friend and an agent over the weekend - he died suddenly," he said.

"I had a very brief chat with him, and he wasn't in a good place. So the club have decided just to give him a bit of time to go away and think about it and get himself in a better place for the future.

"Really, that is as much as there is to tell on the situation. It wasn't dramatic, there was no big bust-up, he didn't storm out of the training ground. It is just a boy who is really quite upset."

Asked if Anelka had mentioned quitting, Clarke added: "I'm not going to deny that he used that word in the conversations we had with him.

"But we've given him time to go away and think about it and I don't think we could do any more in the circumstances as they were."

Clarke to meet with Anelka and see if forward's decision to retire is final


Steve Clarke will speak with Nicolas Anelka in the next 24 hours in order to find out whether his decision to quit West Bromwich Albion is final.
The club’s head coach is anxious to discover whether the former France international has turned his back on the game for good as the transfer window nears its’ close.
West Brom will not seek to strengthen up front if Anelka decides to return to the club following a period of mourning after the death of his solicitor Eric Manasse.



'The situation with Nicolas has not really changed since the end of last week,' said Clarke, 'but I’m conscious that time is short in the remaining part of the window.
'It’s something I will try and address tomorrow. We have to arrange a meeting as quickly as we can.
'I have to sit down and speak with him. We have to get in touch with one another to see where he is and have that chat.
'I’m the head coach, I try and train the players as best I can. That’s my job. But the club, the chairman and Richard (Garlick, sporting and technical director) know we need more players in the squad.'
Clarke also confirmed that he would be in the market for experienced cover in the goalkeeping department after Ben Foster’s problem was diagnosed as a stress fracture of his right foot.

Nicolas Anelka has returned to West Brom and could feature this weekend


West Brom forward Nicolas Anelka will be back in training on Thursday after a period of compassionate leave.

The France international has been away from the club since the death of his friend and agent Eric Manasse,
and reportedly said when he left that he might quit football altogether.

However, it appears the much-travelled 34-year-old is now planning to play on, and he could return to action at the weekend.

A statement on West Brom's website on Wednesday read: "Albion can confirm that Nicolas Anelka will resume first-team training tomorrow
and be available for selection for Sunday's game against Swansea.

"The striker was excused from club duty for the fixtures against Everton and Newport on compassionate grounds and, having met with head coach Steve Clarke today,
he will re-join his team-mates tomorrow."

The news will be well-received by Clarke, who had been facing the possibility of losing a key player not long after he had signed for the club.

Clarke had said after his side's Capital One Cup win on Tuesday night: "I have to sit down and speak to Nicolas, that's the first thing.

"We have to get in touch with him or he has to get in touch with us, and we have to see where he is, where he's at, how he feels, as quickly as possible. We have to have that chat."

Anelka signed a one-year deal with West Brom in July and played in their 1-0 opening-day loss to Southampton.
