The hugely talented 22-year-old Spain international, who joined in the close season from Barcelona, damaged ligaments in his right ankle in the second half of their 2-0 win over Nuremberg on Saturday.

"We will miss him as he will be out for a long time," coach Pep Guardiola said. "He is a special player and very important for the team."

Initially ruled out for seven weeks, Bayern said the player, who was brought in to add versatility and pace to their midfield, could be back in early November.

Thiago will leave the clinic on Tuesday and is expected to use crutches for five to six weeks.

"After that he will then start his rehabilitation training. Guardiola hopes to have 22-year-old back for match action in early November," Bayern said in a statement.

Thiago was one of the treble winners' biggest signings in the close season, joining for a fee of 25 million euros from the Spanish champions on a four-year deal.

Bayern Munich have to pay a heavy price for their UEFA Super Cup triumph over Chelsea on Friday night with the loss of three players to injury.

Midfielders Arjen Robben, Javi Martinez and Mario Gotze will all miss training next week, with Germany international Gotze ruled out for three weeks.

Spain international Martinez, who scored Bayern’s last-gasp equaliser, stretched a knee ligament and will miss out team training for the next five days.

Club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt also ordered a three-day rest for Robben, who was substituted with a swollen knee six minutes into extra time.

Gotze, who has just returned from a three month absence, suffered most and is set to miss another three weeks of action. He twisted an ankle in the challenge that saw Ramires sent off after receiving two yellow cards and will be in plaster for a week, needing a further 14 days of rehabilitation before returning to team training.

Subsequently the former Borussia Dortmund man had to pull out of the Germany squad for their next run of World Cup qualifiers against Austria and the Faroes Islands. Gotze will not be the only Bayern player to miss the qualifiers.

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, 98 caps, who already had to pull out of the Chelsea clash, will not travel to the Germany team and will have to wait for his 100th cap.
