Middlesbrough have completed the signing of former England winger Stewart Downing from West Ham on a four-year deal.

Downing, capped 35 times by England, steps down a division to re-join his home-town club in a deal worth £5.5m that could rise to £7m if Boro are promoted.

The 30-year-old graduated from the Middlesbrough academy and made 234 appearances for the club before leaving for Aston Villa at the end of the 2008-9 season.

Boro head coach Aitor Karanka was delighted to complete the signing of the player and he said: "It's an amazing signing for us. He's more than just a player.

"Nobody expected him to come here, but he wants to be here, and is completely committed to the club and the team. He is a very good person and I'm excited to work with him."

Downing spent two years at Villa Park before joining Liverpool and then moved on to West Ham at the start of the 2013-14 campaign, where he played a regular role over the last two seasons.

Middlesbrough narrowly missed out on promotion under Karanka last season, as they were beaten by Norwich City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley in May.

Downing will now fly out to Marbella to link up with Karanka and the rest of the Boro squad.

Sunderland are in talks with West Ham over signing Stewart Downing – but any deal remains some way off, according to the Sunderland Echo.

The former Middlesbrough midfielder, 30, had a fine 2014/15 season, and had a loan spell at the Black Cats back in 2003.

Boro are in talks with West Ham over the 30-year-old England international, who began his career with his home-town club after emerging as one of its Academy's star graduates.

Press Association Sport understands the player would not be averse to a return to the Riverside Stadium if he proves to be surplus to requirement at Upton Park as new manager Slaven Bilic re-shapes his squad.

However, should that be the case, Sunderland, with whom Downing had a loan spell earlier in his career, too have an interest in him and can offer him Barclays Premier League, rather than Sky Bet Championship football.

Meanwhile, Boro remain hopeful of striking a deal to bring West Ham midfielder Stewart Downing back to his home-town club, according to Sky sources.

The 30-year-old, who is also in Sunderland's sights, is understood to be keen on the move, but no deal has yet been agreed with the Hammers.

Winger Stewart Downing is close to completing a return to Middlesbrough after West Ham gave him permission to speak to his hometown club.
The 30-year-old will have a medical examination on Thursday before meeting with chairman Steve Gibson, BBC Tees Sport has learned.
He will then join the Boro squad at their Marbella training camp.
Downing, capped 35 times by England, left the Riverside for Aston Villa in July 2009, before moving to Liverpool.
He has been with West Ham since 2013 and made 37 Premier League appearances for the Hammers in 2014-15, with his early-season performances earning him an England recall November.
Since making his professional debut for the Teessiders in May 2002, he has made 493 appearances in all competitions, scoring 50 goals.
Middlesbrough were beaten by Norwich City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley in May.
