Real Madrid close on Rafael Benitez as new manager

Rafael Benitez is expected to be installed as the new Real Madrid manager after his season with Italian club Napoli finishes on Sunday.
The former Liverpool manager, 55, has not yet signed a contract with the 10-time European champions but negotiations are at an advanced stage.
Carlo Ancelotti was sacked as Real Madrid manager on Monday after two seasons in charge at the Bernabeu.
Italian Ancelotti, 55, secured Real's 10th European Cup last season.
But this year they were knocked out by Juventus in the Champions League semi-finals, while Barcelona won La Liga.
Spaniard Benitez has managed in his home country before, winning two La Liga titles and the Uefa Cup with Valencia.
He has been at Napoli since 2013 leading the Serie A side to the Coppa Italia last season.
The Spaniard had also been linked with the vacant job at West Ham, following the departure of Sam Allardyce.

Rafael Benitez confirms Napoli departure

Rafael Benitez says he will be leaving Napoli following the final game of the Italian club's season on Sunday.
The Spaniard, 55, is favourite to take over at Real Madrid, who sacked coach Carlo Ancelotti on Monday.
"I want to thank the chairman, club and fans because after two years my experience here in Napoli is coming to an end," said Benitez.
"On Sunday, we have a very important match and I want to finish my two years with a victory."
Napoli, in fourth, host third-placed Lazio in their last game of the Serie A season with a Champions League place at stake.
Benitez's side are three points behind their rivals and a win would see them qualify for Europe's premier club competition on the basis of a better head-to-head record.
Benitez refused to discuss his future and the prospect of taking charge at Real Madrid, where he had stints as a youth coach, Under-19 coach and assistant first-team coach in the 1990s.
"The family has been the key to my choice," he added. "Napoli and [president] Aurelio [De Laurentiis] have made every effort and we were close to renewal."

Rafael Benitez appointment at Real Madrid let slip by vice-president



Real Madrid vice-president Eduardo Fernandez de Blas has accidentally let slip at the meeting of a fans group that Rafa Benitez will be the new club coach.

Benitez will leave Napoli at the end of the season and has been hotly tipped to take over from Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu but so far there has been no confirmation.

"Ancelotti is an absolute phenomenon and we give him all our appreciation," Fernandez de Blas told the Madrid members group.

"Until three days ago he was the best trainer in the world as two years ago it was Jose Mourinho and from this week onwards it will be Rafa Benitez."

talian Ancelotti was dismissed a year after he ended 12 years of Champions League failure and led Real to a record-extending 10th European crown, as well as a Copa del Rey triumph.

Former-Liverpool and Chelsea boss Benitez, who once had a stint as a Real youth team coach, is expected by local media to be named as the new man at the helm of Real next Wednesday.

Rafael Benitez set to become Real Madrid manager

Rafael Benitez is set to be named as Real Madrid manager on Wednesday.
The 55-year-old ex-Liverpool boss ended a two-year stint with Napoli following a 4-2 home defeat by Lazio on Sunday.
"I am enthusiastic and happy, although there are things that still need to be discussed," Benitez said upon his arrival in Madrid.
Madrid-born Benitez will replace Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked last week just a year after winning the Champions League against Atletico Madrid.
Spaniard Benitez will arrive at the Bernabeu with plenty of European pedigree, having won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, Uefa Cup with Valencia in 2004 and the Europa League while interim manager at Chelsea two years ago.
Benitez started his coaching career with Real's youth squad but it was with Valencia that he made his name.
He led them to two La Liga titles before leaving for Liverpool, where he also won the FA Cup and Uefa Super Cup.
After ending a six-year stay at Liverpool he moved on to Inter Milan but was sacked just three months into the 2010-11 season.
He bounced back by leading Chelsea to the Europa League title in the 2012-13 campaign before joining Napoli.
The Spaniard then guided the Italian side to the Coppa Italia in his first season in charge, but the loss to Lazio meant the club finished fifth in Serie A and did not qualify for the Champions League.

Rafa Benitez has been confirmed as the new coach of Real Madrid on a three-year contract and will be introduced to the media at a midday press conference.

"If I had a fantasy team, I would want Cristiano Ronaldo," said Rafael Benitez in 2008 during his time in charge of Liverpool.
