Juan Cuadrado: Chelsea sign Fiorentina winger for £23.3m

Chelsea have signed Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado for an initial fee of £23.3m, which could rise to £26.8m.

The 26-year-old, who impressed for Colombia at the World Cup, joined Chelsea after fellow winger Andre Schurrle moved to Wolfsburg for £22m.

Cuadrado has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the English league leaders.

Chelsea fringe winger Mohamed Salah, 22, is likely to go on loan to Fiorentina as part of the deal.

Cuadrado said: "I am very happy and thankful for this opportunity I've been given.

This is a great club and honestly it is like a dream to join the Chelsea family and to know that the manager believes in me. I'm happy."

It is thought Cuadrado, who has scored five goals in 37 international appearances, had a release clause in his contract of £26.8m.

Cuadrado played in Italy for five and a half years, initially joining Udinese from Medellin in his homeland in 2009. After a loan spell at Lecce, he moved to Fiorentina in 2012 and scored 20 goals in 85 Serie A appearances for the Florence side.

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella revealed the deal was imminent on Friday, saying: "It was a sale that had to be done.

"Cuadrado is a player that has always arrived with a smile and given everything to Fiorentina - I'm happy for him because he is going to a big club."

Salah has made 19 appearances for Chelsea since joining the club from Basel for a fee in the region of £11m in January 2014.

Chelsea are in talks to sign Colombia winger Juan Cuadrado from Serie A club Fiorentina, according to Sky sources.

The 26-year-old impressed at last summer's World Cup and has a £26.8m release clause in his contract at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

It is understood that no formal offer has been made by Chelsea, although there has been speculation that the Premier League leaders had an initial £20.6m bid rejected on Wednesday.

There are also reports that Cuadrado's agent, Alessandro Lucci, is set to fly to London with a view to brokering a deal.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho looks increasingly likely to offload two of his current wingers as he waits for improved offers for Mohamed Salah and Andre Schurrle from Roma and Wolfsburg respectively.

Cuadrado, who along with Germany star Toni Kroos led World Cup 2014 in assists, initially joined the Viola on a season-long loan from Udinese in 2012 - impressing sufficiently to earn a permanent switch the following summer.

Since arriving in Florence, Cuadrado has racked up 21 goals in his 82 appearances for the club.

He was on target on Wednesday with a 12th-minute penalty as Fiorentina beat Atalanta 3-1 in the Italian Cup.

Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Montella is convinced Juan Cuadrado will remain at the club, despite apparent interest from Chelsea in the Colombia winger.

The Blues are in talks to sign Cuadrado, according to Sky sources, although it is understood no formal offer has been made by the Premier League leaders.

Jose Mourinho has tried dispel speculation surrounding Chelsea’s reported interest in Fiorentina midfielder Juan Cuadrado.

"He's a Fiorentina player,” he said ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie with Bradford.

“You ask me 20 names, if I don't know them, then trouble. My son knows them! It's my job to know them.

"I think he fits well in the Fiorentina squad, and the Colombia squad, but not in Chelsea's squad."

Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado has made it clear he wants to join Chelsea, Sky sources understand.

The Serie A club are reluctant to let the Colombian winger leave for anything less thant his £26.8m buyout clause, and Sky Sports News HQ understands discussions are still ongoing over a potential move to Stamford Bridge before the deadline.

No formal offer has yet been accepted for Cuadrado, who played for Fiorentina against Roma on Sunday, and his current manager Vincenzo Montella is at pains to let him leave following 21 goals in 82 appearances for the club.

Montella said last week: “I believe, as of today, there are no possibilities he will leave Fiorentina. He knows this and that these situations get exaggerated.

“I’m not angry with the media, In this case I’m not referring to the media, but to football. All that is being said is just talk and nothing more. The player is not involved in all of this.”

Sky sources understand Chelsea made an offer of £20.6m for Cuadrado, which was turned down last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, we also understand that Chelsea are still interested in signing Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado in the January transfer window.

The two clubs remain in talks for the player, who has a buyout clause of more than £26m in his contract with the Serie A club.

But whether La Viola will allow the Colombia international to move to Stamford Bridge this month will be determined by whether he asks for a transfer to the Blues.
