Wilfried Bony: Man City complete £28m signing of Swansea striker

Manchester City have completed the signing of Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony for £28m.

Bony has agreed a four-and-a-half-year deal at the Etihad Stadium and will wear the number 14 shirt.

"It's a great feeling for me, it's a big honour to be here and it's a great challenge," the 26-year-old said.

Bony joined Swansea for £12m from Vitesse Arnhem in 2013 and was the Premier League's top scorer in 2014 with 20 goals.

The two clubs agreed the terms of the transfer at the weekend, with £25m cash up front and a further £3m in performance-related add-ons.

Bony is currently on international duty with Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations and could potentially have to wait until mid-February before he can make his City debut.

"As a player it's always good to be part of one of the biggest clubs in the world and it's a good opportunity for me to be in that situation now - I'm really proud," Bony told Manchester City's website.

"I felt excited to wait for this moment and now it's come, it's fantastic."

"I think it's a great decision for me - Manchester City are in the Champions League. It's a motivation for me to give my maximum to be in that place."

City boss Manuel Pellegrini added: "He is an intelligent footballer who has skill and power. His goals record has been excellent since he came to England.

"He adapted very quickly to the game here and I think he will settle in at City quickly. We now have four top-class strikers and I am looking forward to seeing them work together."

Swansea earlier criticised the Ivory Coast Football Federation claiming the deal had gone through before either club had announced it.

The Ivory Coast Football Federation said:  "Bony has signed with Manchester City this Wednesday, 14 January."

But a Swansea spokesman said "the Ivory Coast have no right to comment".

Manchester City are in advanced talks with Swansea City over signing Wilfried Bony, BBC Wales Sport has learned.

It is thought it would take more than £30m to prise the Ivory Coast striker, 26, from the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea manager Garry Monk has said it will take an "astronomical" fee to secure Bony in the January transfer window.

He was the Premier League's top scorer in the calendar year of 2014 with 20 goals.

Bony joined Swansea for a club-record £12m from Vitesse Arnhem in 2013.

He is on Africa Cup of Nations duty with the Ivory Coast for at least the next three weeks, and any deal would likely be concluded after his return.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham were all reported to be interested, but the Premier League champions have made the first move to bolster their attacking options.

They were without injured strikers Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko for the festive period and manager Manuel Pellegrini is keen to add further depth to his squad.

The fee being discussed would break the Welsh club record sale of £15m that Liverpool paid Swansea for midfielder Joe Allen in August 2012.

Wilfried Bony is set to have a medical at Manchester City tomorrow morning ahead of a move to the Etihad Stadium, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports understands the Ivory Coast striker is discussing personal terms before travelling to the Middle East on Wednesday to join up with his national squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, with Swansea and the Premier League champions still in advanced talks over a deal for the 26-year-old.

UPDATE: BONY TALKS CONTINUING

Here is the latest on the future of Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony, who is on the verge of completing a big-money move to champions Manchester City.

We understand that talks between the two Premier League clubs resumed early this morning and that there is a desire among both parties to get the deal done, with there now just a small gap in their respective valuations of the Ivory Coast international.

However, the Swans will not allow Bony to leave the Liberty Stadium for anything less than their £30m asking price - with £25m paid up front and £5m in add ons - a fee that would give the South Wales outfit a whopping £17.5m profit on the player.

Transfer news: Wilfried Bony's agent thinks his player will join Manchester City



Wilfried Bony's agent has told Sky Sports News HQ he expects a deal to be done with Manchester City over the next few days.

Premier League title challengers Manchester City have been short of options up front of late and it emerged on Tuesday that they were in advanced talks with Bony, who has been a prolific goal scorer since arriving at Swansea.

The 26-year-old came to Wales from Vitesse Arnhem for £12m in July 2013 and has scored 34 goals in 70 appearances in all competitions since then.

He was given a contract extension seven weeks ago which runs until 2018 but the Ivory Coast international is now apparently on the verge of a move to to the reigning Premier League champions.

Bony is valued at around £30m and our reporter Gary Cotterill spoke to the Swansea forward and his representative at the airport before they left for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Asked directly if he thought the Manchester City deal would happen, Bony's agent Francis Kacou said: "Yes, it looks like it.

"Talks are going on but we hope, soon, things will happen."

Bony is heading off to join his Ivory Coast teammates for a training camp ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.

“The discussions are still going on and now I am going to join my national team, so I will just focus on that," he said.

“There is no news yet but the negotiations are going on.

“We don’t know what will happen or what will be later, but now I’m just focused on the national team.”

Asked if he was heartened by City’s interest, he said: “It is good to hear.

“Why not (join Manchester City)? Every player wants to play Champions League, it is a wish of every player. So, if you get that opportunity ...?

“I’m just taking things step by step. Now, it is just national team. I am waiting like you.”

Asked if any other clubs were interested in signing Bony, Kacou said: “There are rumours about other things but it is City at the moment.

“There are some small details about money but I think things will be all right in a few days.

“I’m flying with him to Abu Dhabi and let’s see what will happen.”
