Liverpool remain adamant that Philippe Coutinho won't be sold - despite the Brazil international submitting a written transfer request urging the club to let him join Barcelona.

The ECHO understands that the bombshell email was sent directly from Coutinho to the club's sporting director Michael Edwards shortly after 1pm today.

However, Liverpool insist the transfer request changes nothing and they intend to snub any further approaches from Barcelona.

The fact that Coutinho has taken steps to agitate for a move is a major blow for the Reds on the eve of the new Premier League season.

Liverpool rejected an improved offer of £90million from Barcelona for Coutinho this week and earlier today FSG released a statement ruling out any prospect of doing a deal with the Catalan giants.

It read: “We wish to offer clarity as regards our position on a possible transfer of Philippe Coutinho.

"The club’s definitive stance is that no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool Football Club when the summer window closes."

Speaking at his Melwood press conference today, boss Jurgen Klopp revealed that Coutinho will miss Saturday's trip to Watford with a back injury and is a doubt for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Hoffenheim.

Of the club statement on Coutinho's future, Klopp added: "If FSG have said something like this, then that's the statement. I've said about it a few times, but maybe it's not been 100% clear. Now you can read it.

“That's the way it will go, there's nothing else to say about it. The bigger issue is that he's not available."

Asked if the transfer request changed anything, Liverpool's German manager said: "You have to ask the club. I didn't see the club today - those people. You have to ask them. But I don't think so because I think it was pretty clear what the club, FSG, said about it."

Klopp, whose side conceded a last-gasp equaliser at Vicarage Road, said the decision was one for FSG and he would have to accept either outcome.

"I can say something that is maybe a more important thing," Klopp added. "As a manager of a football club I have bosses, and if bosses decide, for example, just in general, to sell a player or we don't sell him, then I have to accept it.

"If they don't sell him, then I'm not involved anymore. I'm responsible for all players, not just one, two or three.

"I cannot say anything about it. The only thing is I work with the players I have - that is what I'm always doing."

PLAYERS SYMPATHISE WITH COUTINHO

According to Sky sources, Philippe Coutinho's Liverpool teammates sympathise with him after he handed in a transfer request.

They can see why he wants to move to Barcelona because nearly all players would say yes to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Coutinho did not feature in today's draw with Watford due to a back injury.

Philippe Coutinho: Liverpool midfielder left out of squad for Hoffenheim match

Philippe Coutinho has been left out of Liverpool's squad for Tuesday's Champions League play-off first leg against Hoffenheim.

The 25-year-old midfielder submitted a transfer request last week, days after the club rejected a 100 million euros (£90m) bid from Barcelona.

He missed Saturday's Premier League opener with Watford with a back injury.

Speaking after the 3-3 draw, boss Jurgen Klopp said he expected the Reds' owners to refuse to sell the player.

Barca have moved for the Brazilian after selling compatriot Neymar to Paris St-Germain for a world record transfer of £200m.

Coutinho signed a new five-year deal in January, which did not include a release clause.

Liverpool start their European campaign with the first leg at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena in Germany, with the return clash at Anfield on Wednesday, 23 August.

The winner will progress to the group stage of the Champions League.
