The New Orleans Hornets are under the ownership of David Stern and the National Basketball Association. General manager Dell Demps has been working feverishly the past few days to move franchise point guard Chris Paul to another team since the All-Star guard is not expected to re-sign with the team when his current contract expires.
Paul has longed to play with a bigger market team such as the New York Knicks, where his good friend Carmelo Anthony moved during the 2010-11 NBA season. So to avoid a difficult situation, the Hornets were looking to have a fresh start to the 2011-12 NBA season.
The three-team trade involving the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and the New Orleans Hornets that would have sent All-Star point guard Chris Paul to the Lakers was reportedly put on hold by NBA commissioner David Stern due to “basketball reasons."Earlier in the day, Yahoo Sports NBA columnist Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Lakers would receive Chris Paul, while the Rockets would acquire Pau Gasol and the Hornets would receive Lamar Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, Goran Dragic, a 2012 first-round draft pick (from the New York Knicks) and possibly a second-round draft pick. While the trade was never completely finalized, NBA owners protested to David Stern to stop the trade since it was going against everything they had fought for during the lockout.
This is a very interesting move by Stern and the NBA as it may force teams to rethink making one-sided trades or trades that are not “balanced." It is very difficult to compile trades involving big-salaried players in the first place, but there needs to be a way to push for a more “balanced” move.
