Mondragon becomes the World Cup's oldest ever player



Colombia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon became the oldest player to take to the field in a World Cup after his substitute appearance against Japan on Tuesday.

The Colombia shot-stopper entered the pitch in the 85th minute, replacing David Ospina to a rapturous applause from los Cafeteros' fans during the 4-1 Group C win.

Having just turned 43 on June 21, the keeper became the oldest man to play in a World Cup finals match,

beating Cameroon's Roger Milla, who appeared at the age of 42 years, one month and eight days during the 1994 World Cup.

Mondragon not only broke Milla's record, but also entered into the annals of World Cup history by becoming the player

with the most time elapsed between his most recent appearances, having last featured 16 years ago at France '98.

This record was formally held by the Switzerland's Alfred Bickel, who experienced a 12-year gap between playing in World Cups which,

interestingly, were also held in France and Brazil in 1938 and 1950 respectively.

Mondragon, who has 57 international caps, is set to retire from football after the tournament in Brazil, bringing to an end a 24-year career.

The goalkeeper left Deportivo Cali at the end of the previous campaign after spending time in eight countries,

earning two league titles with Galatasaray and a Copa Libertadores with Independiente.

哥倫比亞周二在世界盃決賽周C組最後1場分組賽，以4:1擊敗日本隊，取得小組的首名出線。在完場前哥倫比亞後備門將蒙達干（Faryd Mondragon）後備登場，以43歲的年齡成為世界盃決賽周史上最年長的上陣球員，打破了喀麥隆傳奇球星米拿在1994年美國世界盃創下的42歲最年長上陣紀錄。

6月21日剛踏入43歲的蒙達干，目前效力國內球隊卡利體育會，他參加過3屆世界盃決賽周，分別是1994年美國世盃、1998年法國世盃與今屆。不過讓人遺憾的是，蒙達干賽後打算把兒子抱進球場分享光榮時刻，卻被在場的保安阻止。

賽後，蒙達干為自己的榮譽感到自豪，「這是哥倫比亞足球和國家的紀錄，我很高興能代表哥倫比亞創下這項紀錄。」蒙達干在決賽周之前在twitter表示如果教練比格文能選他入23人大軍，他將毫無遺憾，並將在決賽周後退役。這次比格文特意讓他上陣破紀錄，相信他更加無憾了。

Mondragon confirms retirement from football

Faryd Mondragon has confirmed he will retire from football following Colombia's World Cup exit at the hands of Brazil.

The former Galatasaray goalkeeper, now 43, became the oldest player to take part in a World Cup finals match when he replaced David Ospina in the group-stage win over Japan.

He had earlier announced this summer's tournament in Brazil would be his last as a player and the Deportivo Cali icon has now confirmed his career has reached its conclusion.

"This is my last stadium as a professional player," he said on his official Instagram page. "I'm proud to be part of this wonderful group."

Mondragon, who began his career with the Colombian outfit, enjoyed spells with Independiente and Santa Fe before moving to Europe to join Real Sociedad in 1999.

His most successful period came with Turkish giants Galatasaray, where he won two Super Lig titles and a domestic cup between 2001 and 2007, after which he joined Koln.

Mondragon, who earned a total of 56 caps for Colombia over a remarkable 23-year period,

spent a season with Philadelphia Union in 2011 before returning to Deportivo Cali for two years prior to his retirement.
