Heerenveen hires Marco Van BastenHEERENVEEN, Netherlands -- Former Dutch star Marco van Basten has signed a two-year contract to coach Heerenveen starting next season.
The 47-year-old scored a tournament-high five goals to help the Dutch win the 1988 European Championship and starred for Ajax and AC Milan in a career cut short by ankle injuries. He coached the Netherlands from 2004-08 and Ajax from 2008 until he quit in 2009.
Van Basten will replace Ron Jans, whose contract will not be extended at the end of his second season. Heerenveen is third in the Dutch league.
