Chelsea are set to target Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo once John Obi Mikel completes a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer, according to talkSPORT.
The report claims Mikel is expected to leave Chelsea this summer with new boss Jose Mourinho not seeing the defensive midfielder as a part of his long-term plans. The Nigerian international only signed a new five-year contract last season but it appears his time in west London is coming to an end with a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray on the cards.
His departure would leave Mourinho with a hole to fill in his squad and talkSPORT claim the Portuguese boss is keen to fill it with the purchase of Brazilian enforcer Gustavo from Champions League winners Bayern Munich.
The 25-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a first team regular since joining from Hoffenheim in 2010 – only managing 22 league appearances last season – and with two years left to run on his current contract, the report suggests he could be available for around £16m.
Gustovo had insisted earlier in the summer that he’s happy to remain at the Allianz Arena but the arrival of Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona has made competition for places that much harder and the midfielder could now be open to a move, and it appears Chelsea are ready to offer him a fresh start in the Premier League.
