  • Luis Suarez 'to stay at Liverpool and may even sign new contract'

A high-profile Latin American journalist has claimed that the striker told him personally that he will not be leaving Anfield

Luis Suarez is ready to perform an amazing U-turn and stay at Liverpool, according to reports in Uruguay.

The striker has been pushing for a move away from Merseyside all summer, but it is claimed he could now be ready to abandon those plans – and even sign a new deal.

Martin Charquero, of GolTV Latin American, claimed that the forward told him personally he would not leave Anfield.

He tweeted: “Luis Suarez confirms to me he will not leave Liverpool. The support of the fans has influenced his -decision.”

"Suarez see it as likely that he'll sign a renewal (extension) to the contract that binds him to Liverpool."

Arsenal's chase for the striker hit a hurdle when it emerged that a clause in the Uruguayan's contract did not in fact trigger his sale.

The claims come as Gunners boss Arsene Wenger draws up a Plan B which could see him resurrect an interest in Swansea’s Spanish goal-machine Michu.

The north Londoners have also compiled extensive scouting reports on Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko in the past and Wenger still rates him highly and would move given any encouragement.

They passed up on interest in David Villa, Gonzalo Higuain and Stevan Jovetic to concentrate on the Suarez pursuit.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard insisted yesterday that the club would do everything to keep Suarez.

Gerrard said: “It’s very important (Suarez stays). He is one of the best players in the world.

"I can understand why clubs are showing an interest in him.

“If I can use my influence to try to get him to stay then of course I will because I love playing with him and I don’t want him to go.

"For Liverpool to be successful and move forward we have to keep our best players.”

Suarez is currently suspended for a further six matches as his 10-match ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in April was carried over.

Luis Suarez apologises to Liverpool
August 16, 2013

Luis Suarez has rejoined Liverpool first-team training after apologising to the club for his behaviour over the summer.

Neither the Reds nor the striker’s representatives have made any comment on the issue, but sources have confirmed to ESPN that the striker did train with the squad on Friday.

It is also understood that Suarez said sorry to his team-mates after arriving back on Merseyside from Japan, where he had been on midweek international duty with Uruguay.

The 26-year-old was ordered to train on his own last week in response to manager Brendan Rodgers’ concerns about his attitude.

And Rodgers said last week that Suarez would not be allowed to join up with the rest of his team-mates until he said sorry for showing "total disrespect" to the club.

The Uruguay international has given a series of interviews since the end of May stating that he wants to leave Anfield.

He claimed earlier this month he had been promised a year ago that he could depart if Liverpool failed to qualify for this season’s Champions League.

Both Rodgers and the club have dismissed those claims, insisting that they are under no obligation to sell the player.

Arsenal have had two bids for Suarez rejected, including an offer of £40,000,001 made on July 23, in the apparent belief that it would trigger a release clause in his contract. Liverpool insist that there is no such clause.

Principal owner John W. Henry has made clear that the striker will not be leaving this summer, and dismissed the notion of selling him to Arsenal as “ludicrous”.

On Wednesday, Suarez denied a Uruguayan journalist’s report that he had decided to stay at Anfield, but his chances of leaving before the transfer window shuts are looking increasingly unlikely.

The former Ajax man is suspended for Saturday’s Premier League opener against Stoke as he continues to serve a ten-match ban imposed after he bit Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a 2-2 draw at Anfield in April.
