Gianfranco Zola has resigned his role as Watford manager after a run of five successive home defeats.

Zola led the club to last season's Championship play-off final, but Saturday's defeat to Sheffield Wednesday left them in mid-table - as close to the bottom three as to the top six.

And a statement on the Watford website confirmed the Italian's resignation, after 18 months in the job, had been accepted "with great sadness".

In an open letter to supporters, Zola wrote: "I am writing this with a very heavy heart and after a lot of consideration, to tell you that I have resigned.

"First of all, this decision has not been made quickly. I mentioned after the game on Saturday that I wanted to think about things overnight and that is exactly what I have done.

"I must place Watford Football Club first in my thoughts and it is for this reason that I have taken my action.

"I feel that it is in the best interests of the team that somebody new is given the chance to bring the success which we have all hoped for and worked very hard for.

"It is for a variety of reasons, and not just over one matter or one moment, that I feel this is the right decision for me, in the best interests of the club - and I know I can trust you, the supporters, to respect my decision fully."

Ian Holloway and Steve Clarke were installed as the early favourites to replace Zola by Sky Bet, while Torino boss Rolando Maran and Udinese head coach Francesco Guidolin were also prominent in the early betting.

Watford: Giuseppe Sannino named as head coach

Watford have named Giuseppe Sannino as their new head coach, following Gianfranco Zola's resignation.

Sannino, 56, has never previously worked outside of Italy and Watford is his 13th managerial role, having also taken charge of clubs including Siena, Palermo and Chievo Verona.

He will be joined by assistant coaches Francesco Troise, Giovanni Cusatis and Paolo De Toffol.

Watford are currently 13th in the Championship table.

Zola's departure on Monday followed a run of just one win in 10 matches, including five straight home defeats.

When the Italian Pozzo family took over at Vicarage Road in June 2012, their stated aim was to take the Hornets back up to the Premier League and named the former Chelsea and Italy forward as their new boss shortly after buying the club.

They narrowly missed out on promotion under Zola last season, finishing third and losing the play-off final against Crystal Palace 1-0 thanks to Kevin Phillips's extra-time penalty.

With the club now 17 points below leaders Queens Park Rangers and eight points away from the play-off places, Sannino will be expected to turn the team's form around, starting at Ipswich on Saturday.

His coaching career began in the 1990s, but he had to wait until 2011 for his first chance in Serie A when he was appointed by Siena.

He then moved on to Palermo, who subsequently sacked and re-hired him in the space of six months, and most recently had only four months with Chievo before being relieved of his role.

Sannino's arrival at Watford continues the club's close ties with Italian football, where the Pozzo family also own Serie A side Udinese.

Last season they took advantage of the connection, bringing in 10 Udinese players on loan, which prompted a tightening of the rules surrounding overseas loans by the Football League.
