Please don’t do it, Diego! Maradona ‘set for playing comeback’
Diego Maradona is reportedly in line to make a return to the pitch, to apparently help a friend at an Argentine fifth division club. The 53-year-old ended a 22-year playing career in 1998, but
Argentine outlet Ole report that a request from Primera D side Deportivo Riestra has been put in to the Argentine Football Association to register him as a player.
"Within five gameweeks, Maradona will be playing for Riestra," revealed the source.
"He will debut around the 23rd of March."Squad member Victor More has already revealed he will happily give up the iconic number 10 shirt for the arriving legend, admitting "I'll wear whatever."
Maradona, who was recently back in Italy and is looking to resolve an outstanding tax debt in the peninsula, joined Riestra’s coaching staff back in August as a ‘spiritual coach’.
When he was asked to return to the dugout he reportedly replied: "I want to play."
The Argentine legend is expected to be involved with the club due to friend and legal representative Victor Stinfale’s links to it.
Such is the anticipation of his return, Riestra are understood to be planning to abandon their 3,000 seater stadium to relocate to the ground that San Lorenzo use - the top-flight champions.
ED cannot hide its discomfort with the idea that Maradona is set to explode back on the scene with all the attention and publicity that would come with it.
Arguably the greatest talent of all time, the legendary Argentine has had his fair share of health issues over the years and it strikes us as rather worrying that he would even think about making a comeback.
