Transfer news: Newcastle sign Jack Colback from Sunderland on free transfer



[Newcastle United have signed midfielder Jack Colback from Sunderland on a free transfer, according to Sky sources.

The 24-year-old, who was a boyhood Newcastle fan, can also play at left-back and had been linked with West Ham and Aston Villa.

Colback is understood to have signed a five-year deal at St James' Park.

The former England U20 international signed professional terms with Sunderland six years ago following a spell in the club's youth academy.

He scored the final goal in Sunderland's 3-0 win at Newcastle in February.

He made over 100 appearances for Sunderland and also played 50 times for Ipswich over two loan spells at Portman Road.

Paul Bracewell was the last high profile player to join Newcastle directly from Sunderland in 1992.

Transfer news: Ayoze Perez completes move to Newcastle on long-term deal



Newcastle United have announced the signing of striker Ayoze Perez from Tenerife on a long-term deal.

The 20-year-old attracted interest from Newcastle boss Alan Pardew after scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances for the Spanish second tier side.

Perez started his career at Tenerife, progressing through the youth ranks, but is relishing his new challenge at St James' Park.

"I'm very happy to be here to start this new adventure," he told the club's official website.

"I'm very eager for it to begin and I'm very pleased to play for this magnificent club.

"Any football player would be interested in playing for such a club and I will earn my position to get in the first team."

And Pardew added: "We're delighted to confirm our first signing of the summer

and very pleased to have Ayoze at Newcastle United, as a number of other clubs were chasing his signature too.

"He had a terrific season in Spain last year and is a player who we hope to develop further on Tyneside.

"He's only 20 but has a very good eye for goal and that's a great asset for any young player to have."

Fans are split over the signing. Many don't want Colback anywhere near the club after his provocative behaviour in and around a couple of recent derby games. His misdemeanours include shushing the Gallowgate End crowd as Sunderland beat Newcastle 3-0 last season, as well as later signalling the '3' in a social media message.

Others can see past that but aren't convinced of Colback's quality, arguing that he looked mediocre in a very poor Sunderland team. Few are pleased by the signing, though at 24 years of age and commanding no transfer fee, he fits the club's transfer policy perfectly.

Personally, Colback has never stood out to me. Sure, he's a tidy footballer who retains possession well in the middle of the park despite his frail stature, but will he add to what Newcastle already have? Since Yohan Cabaye's 18 million-pound move to Paris in January, Newcastle have badly lacked a creative spark in the middle of the field. Will Colback provide that? His stats suggest not, having contributed only three goals and two assists last season. I can't help but think that he is a Geordie version of Vurnon Anita -- a player who has never overly convinced manager Alan Pardew.

Newcastle United are pleased to confirm the signing of Ayoze Perez from CD Tenerife on a long-term contract.
The 20-year-old striker was born in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, on 23rd July 1993 and joined the youth set up at his local club in 2004.
Last season, Ayoze - as he is known - progressed to the first team, playing in the Segunda Division, Spain's second tier.
He enjoyed a prolific season for the Chicharreros, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances.

Newcastle United are pleased to confirm the signing of Killingworth-born Jack Colback.
The former Sunderland midfielder, aged 24, was out of contract at the Stadium of Light at the end of last season and has signed a long-term contract at St. James' Park.
Colback joined Sunderland when he was ten-years-old and rose through their youth ranks to make his Black Cats debut on the final day of the 2009/10 season against Wolves.
That followed a successful loan season at Ipswich Town, which included playing twice against United,
who romped to the Championship title. At the end of that campaign, Colback was named Players' Player of the Season at Portman Road.

Upon returning to the North-East, he went on to make 115 Barclays Premier League appearances for Sunderland and picked up a runners-up medal in the Wearsiders' 2014 Capital One Cup final defeat to Manchester City.
Left-footed Colback, who was capped once by England at under-20 level in March 2009, said: "I'm absolutely delighted.
"To come to the team I supported as a boy, my hometown team, will be really special for me.
"It was an opportunity I couldn't let slip. If you asked fans around the world the one thing they'd like to do before they die,
it would be to play for the team they support and I've got the chance to do that.
"I've only got good things to say about Sunderland. They gave me my chance and I want to thank the fans and the club for all their support.
"I hope they can understand the chance I've had here to move to my boyhood club. Now I can't wait to pull on the black and white shirt at St. James' Park for the first time."
