Transfer news: Napoli unable to agree deal for Pepe Reina with Liverpool



The agent of Pepe Reina has told the Italian media that Napoli are reluctant to meet Liverpool's asking price for the Spanish goalkeeper.

Reina spent the 2013/14 campaign on loan in Italy after falling out of favour at Anfield.

The arrival of Simon Mignolet pushed him down the pecking order and left the World Cup winner looking for game time elsewhere.

Napoli were delighted to offer him the opportunities he craves, with head coach Rafa Benitez having previously worked with Reina in England.

The 31-year-old has regularly expressed a desire to stay on in Naples, but he is now being forced to accept that uncertainty continues to shroud his future.

A return to Spain has been mooted, with Atletico Madrid said to be keen,

but for now it appears as though Reina will be heading back for pre-season training on Merseyside.

His representative, Manuel Garcia Quilon, told Corriere dello Sport: "It's very difficult for Pepe to remain at Napoli.

"From June 30, he will return to Liverpool because they want to maximise his sale, and Napoli are not willing to spend what is required."

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez has ruled out signing Pepe Reina on a permanent deal from Liverpool due to his wage demands.
The 31-year-old spent last season on loan at the Serie A side, making 40 appearances in all competitions,
as Simon Mignolet became Brendan Rodgers’ first-choice goalkeeper at Anfield following his summer switch from Sunderland.

Sky Sport Italia are reporting that Napoli have reopened talks with Liverpool as they look to secure the signature of goalkeeper Pepe Reina on a permanent basis.
The Spain international, who is currently on duty at the World Cup, spent last season on loan with Rafa Benitez’s side.

Napoli coach Rafael Benitez appears to have ended speculation that Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina could return to the Serie A club.

The Spain international has slipped behind Simon Mignolet in the pecking order at Anfield and manager Brendan Rodgers allowed him to spend last season on loan at Napoli.

Reina, who has two years left on his Liverpool contract, said last week he was open to the prospect of playing again for the Italian club.

But Benitez already has two shot-stoppers at his disposal and ruled out another reunion with the 31-year-old, who played under him at Liverpool.

"We don't seek a goalkeeper," Benitez said on his official website, www.rafabenitez.com.

"Rafael, with whom I keep in touch often to monitor his progress first hand, (Mariano) Andujar and (Roberto) Colombo are a sufficient guarantee for our goal."

Rafael Cabral has been absent since February with a knee injury but is nearing full fitness,

while Mariano Andujar is back from a loan spell and veteran Roberto Colombo remains at the club.

Pepe Reina will spend the next season at Liverpool following the end of his loan spell with Napoli, the goalkeeper’s agent has confirmed.

The 31-year-old has two years remaining on his deal in England but was loaned out to Serie A for the duration of last season as Brendan Rodgers made Simon Mignolet his number one stopper at Anfield.

Reina’s future has been uncertain since manager Rafael Benitez admitted Napoli were unable to afford a permanent move for the Spain international.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have been among the clubs linked with a bid for Reina this summer, but agent Manuel Garcia Quillon says he will be returning to his parent club.

"I know rumours are circulating about Reina’s future. But I can confirm that next season Pepe will play for Liverpool," he told Tuttonapoli.it.

"Reina will respect his deal with the English side."
