Laim Ridgewell joins MLS club Portland Timbers in United States
Former England Under-21 defender Liam Ridgewell has joined Portland Timbers, say the Major League Soccer club.
The 29-year-old left West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season when the club did not extend his deal.
"He's been playing game in and out in the Premier League versus many of the top attacking players in the world," said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter.
"This pedigree makes him an ideal choice to enhance our backline for the second half of the season and beyond."
Ridgewell began his career at Aston Villa before spells at fellow Midlands clubs Birmingham and West Brom.
He played 33 times for the Baggies last season and scored one goal as the club narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight.
Speaking to his club's official website, Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson said Ridgewell had attended a recent match at the American outfit's Providence Park stadium.
"Liam was incredibly taken by the fans and atmosphere generated here in Portland," said Wilkinson.
"Despite receiving several attractive offers to stay in the Premiership, he chose the Timbers due to his belief in the vision and football philosophy of the organisation.
"He is keenly committed to helping this club exceed its already lofty goals this season, and for seasons to come."
