Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano dies at the age of 88





Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano, regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, has died.
The 88-year-old suffered a heart attack on Saturday and had been in an induced coma in Madrid's Gregorio Maranon hospital.
Real Madrid confirmed the news, saying Di Stefano, their honorary president, died at 1715 CET (1615 BST).
A forward, he won five straight European Cups, scoring in each final between 1956 and 1960.
Real president Florentino Perez said he and the club's board would 'like to express deepest condolences and all their love and affection to his children, their families and friends'.
The Argentina-born player also won eight Spanish league titles and was voted European player of the year in 1957 and 1959.
He left Real in 1964 at the age of 38, having scored more than 300 goals across 11 seasons.
Di Stefano played at international level for three nations but never appeared at the World Cup.
He won six caps for Argentina and played four times for Colombia during a spell in that country's league.
However, his Colombia caps are not officially recognised by Fifa.
Fifa said in 1954 he could not play for Spain but reversed that decision in 1957 after he gained citizenship and he went on to win 31 caps, scoring 23 goals.

Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano is in "critical condition" in hospital after a heart attack.

The 88-year-old was admitted to Madrid's Gregorio Maranon Hospital's intensive care unit on Saturday.

Real Madrid spokeswoman Marta Santisteban said Di Stefano was in "critical,

serious" condition after paramedics found his heart had stopped beating and he had stopped breathing, but they managed to resuscitate him after 18 minutes.

Di Stefano underwent a quadruple aorta-coronary bypass with a pacemaker implanted in December 2005 after suffering a myocardial infarction.

He was voted European player of the year in 1957 and 1959, is most associated with Real Madrid and was instrumental in their domination

of the European Cup during the 1950s; the club won the trophy in five consecutive seasons from 1956.

Along with Francisco Gento, he was one of only two players to play a part in all five victories and he is the honorary life president of the 32-time Spanish champions.

Di Stefano played international football mostly for Spain - scoring 23 goals in 31 appearances - but he also played for Argentina and Colombia.

Di Stefano passes away aged 88

Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano has passed away after spending two days in extensive care following a heart attack.

The Blancos honorary President collapsed in the Spanish capital on Saturday and was quickly rushed to intensive care.

But after fighting for his life over the weekend, it has been confirmed that the 88-year-old has sadly died.

Di Stefano spent 11 years as a player at Santiago Bernabeu between 1953 and 1964, winning eight La Liga titles and five European Cups.

The Buenos-Aires born forward also played for Espanyol late in his career, and managed the likes of Elche, Valencia and Rayo Vallecano.

It is at Santiago Bernabeu however, where he will be most fondly remembered, being named honorary life President in 2000.

If that offer was purely symbolic there were material pledges too, most significantly the offer to loan United the world’s finest footballer, Alfredo di Stefano, “the Blond Arrow”, for the 1958-59 season. “Bernabeu went to see Di Stefano about this,” Ludden said. “He was willing to go until the end of the season, United paying half his wages and Madrid the other half. But the Football Association blocked it as he would be taking the place of a potential British player.”
