Ajax director Marc Overmars has confirmed that the club is in talks with former Chelsea forward Samuel Eto'o over a potential move to the Amsterdam giants.

Eto'o and his agent were reported to have met Overmars in Paris on Friday to thrash out a potential deal after the striker was released by Chelsea recently.

The Cameroon international was believed to have wanted to stay in England

and had been in talks with a number of Premier League clubs including West Ham, QPR and Sunderland.

The Black Cats were leading the race to sign Eto'o after the player's wage demands had put off QPR and the 33-year-old had rejected a move to The Hammers.

However, Overmars has now confirmed that Eto’o is nearing a move to Ajax in the coming weeks.

"Samuel seemed very hungry to play for Ajax. He is fit and has a great drive to succeed once again," Overmars told Voetbal International.

"We don't want to block the growing process of our talents like Milik and Zivkovic, but if it is possible to sign a world class player like Eto'o, then why not? It will be fantastic."

Eto’o scored 12 goals in all competitions for Chelsea last season - all coming at Stamford Bridge -

but the Blues opted not to extend his one-year deal, which left the player looking for a new club.

De Boer: I want Eto'o

Ajax boss Frank De Boer has admitted he wants to sign free agent Samuel Eto'o and use him as an "example" for the club's next breed of young stars.

The striker has been a free agent since leaving Chelsea at the end of last season,

but the Amsterdam club's sporting director Marc Overmars revealed they had spoken to the player on Saturday.

De Boer has now given his vocal backing to the pursuit of the Cameroonian star, with the former Inter and Barcelona man set to watch the club's clash with Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday.

"It would be great for us if we could get a player like him," De Boer told Fox Sports.

"He has still got the ambition to show what he's got. He must take a role as leader, show our young players what it means to be a professional football player.

"He must be an example for our youth. I want him to show why he wants to come to us. We're looking for a striker and if it will be him, that would be great."

Eto'o has also been offered to Ajax's Eredivisie rivals PSV,

though they appear to be in pole position for his signature after the Eindhoven club baulked at his ?2 million a year salary demands.

PSV's technical manager Marc Brands added: "I don't know who represents him but yesterday we had an offer from his people.

"We are already full in that area with Jurgen Locadia and Luuk de Jong.

?2m net plus add ons was the salary demanded and that was too much for our club - it's more than double our salary cap."

Transfer news: Ajax closing on deal for free agent Samuel Eto'o

Dutch giants Ajax are hoping to fend off Premier League interest in Samuel Eto'o and add the striker to their books.

The 33-year-old frontman is available as a free agent after reaching the end of a one-year deal at Chelsea.

West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have explored the possibility of keeping the Cameroon international in England.

They could, however, be about to miss out on Eto'o's signature to the reigning Eredivisie champions.

Ajax are famed for their production of home-grown talent but will always keep the door open to experienced recruits who could benefit the stars of tomorrow in Amsterdam.

Eto'o is considered to be too good an opportunity to pass up, with sporting director Marc Overmars revealing that an agreement is close following positive discussions.

He told Voetbal International: "Samuel seemed very hungry to play for Ajax.

"He is fit and has a great drive to succeed once again.

"We don’t want to block the growing process of our talents like (Arkadiusz) Milik and (Richairo) Zivkovic,

but if it is possible to sign a world class player like Eto'o, then why not? It will be fantastic."

Eto'o approaches Inter over return

Samuel Eto’o is dreaming of a sensational return to former club Inter and has put a potential move to Ajax on hold as he holds out for a second spell at San Siro.

The Cameroonian is a free agent after his contract with Chelsea expired this summer and spent the weekend in talks with Ajax over a possible move to the Amsterdam Arena.

But Eto’o’s preferred destination is Inter, the club where he won the treble during a brilliant two-year spell between 2009 and 2011.

The club's president, Erick Thohir, is currently against the idea of re-signing the 33-year-old due to his age and salary –

which will be at least ?4-5 million a season, working out at ?10m gross.

Coach Walter Mazzarri is in the market for a frontman to complement current attackers Mauro Icardi, Pablo Osvaldo and Rodrigo Palacio,

but would prefer a second striker rather than another penalty box type player.

Butthe ex-Barcelona star is not giving up just yet and, despite having offers on the table from both Ajax and Wolfsburg,

he is prepared to give Thohir and Mazzarri more time to change their minds. The veteran will wait at least another week in the hope of receiving good news.

One month ago, Eto’o had agreed a potential transfer to Juventus but after discussions with the player’s representatives the Bianconeri decided that his wages were too high.

The veteran originally joined Inter as part of a swap deal involving Zlatan Ibrahimovic five years ago,

with Barcelona paying ?46 million for the Sweden star as well as allowing Eto'o to move in the other direction.

Under Jose Mourinho he scored 33 goals in 67 Serie A appearances before leaving the club for Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011.

Liverpool are discussing Samuel Eto’o as a potential candidate as the club look to bring in a new striker.
Eto’o is available following his release from Chelsea at the end of last season and would provide experience to Brendan Rodgers’ squad.
Rodgers has been looking for a forward since a deal for Loic Remy collapsed but Eto’o, at this stage, is no more than just under consideration.
The 33-year-old does not fit the profile Liverpool have tended to sign under Fenway Sports Group’s ownership but he is a three-time Champions League winner and Liverpool, who will return to that competition after a five-season absence, are short of players with that experience.
Inter Milan and Ajax have also spoken to the player's representatives in recent days.

Eto'o set for second round of Liverpool talks

Samuel Eto'o will hold a second round of talks with Liverpool later this week after failing to agree a deal during initial discussions, Goal understands.

The Cameroon international wants a one-year contract worth a basic £135,000 a week,

while Liverpool have offered a lower package but are willing to top up the 33-year-old's wages with performance-related add-ons.

Discussions between representatives of the striker and Anfield officials took place on Tuesday

and further talks are planned for Thursday as the Merseysiders seek proven back-up to Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert.

Ajax, Everton and West Ham are among the clubs keen on negotiating a deal for the veteran, while there is also strong interest from a number of Italian clubs.

The Cameroonian was released by Chelsea at the end of last season and is currently a free agent.

Liverpool have been scuppered in their attempts to sign a direct replacement for Luis Suarez despite selling the Uruguayan for a club-record fee of over £70 million.

Loic Remy failed a medical after agreeing a £9m switch from QPR and other negotiations are yet to bear fruit due to price and availability.

He may have been born in 1981 but don’t dare call Eto’o finished.
The striker proved it last season at Chelsea by scoring 9 goals in 21 matches.
Today Eto’o is still looking for a team but that isn’t due to a lack of offers.
At the moment his most likely destination is Liverpool, although in the last few hours Ajax has become another option.
Both are concrete possibilities for Eto’o who is looking for a new challenge for the 2014/15 season.

Ajax pull out of Eto'o deal: We're not going to wait anymore



Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has revealed that the club have pulled out of the race to sign Samuel Eto'o after losing patience with the striker.

The Dutch champions had set a deadline for the player to decide whether he wished to move to Amsterdam,

but the Cameroonian refused to be pressured into making up his mind over his next move.

"Of course, Eto'o has the right to think about his future as long as he wants," Overmars told Voetbal International.

"But we're not going to wait for him anymore. We told him that we're not interested in any further talks."

Eto'o has been without a club since parting company with Chelsea at the end of the season

and has since been linked with a host of European teams, including Liverpool and former club Inter.
