Felix Magath: Struggling Fulham sack manager after poor start

Fulham have sacked manager Felix Magath following their poor start to the season and appointed Kit Symons as caretaker boss at Craven Cottage.
Magath, 61, had only been in charge of the club since February and was unable to prevent them from being relegated from the Premier League last season.
Fulham are bottom of the Championship, having taken just one point from their first seven games of the new campaign.
"This is an unfortunate but necessary change," said chairman Shahid Khan.
"I am doing what I feel is right and needed for Fulham, for today as well as tomorrow."
Magath became Fulham's third manager of the 2013-14 season following the dismissals of Martin Jol and Rene Meulensteen,
but the German could not save the west London club from relegation, ending their 13-year stay in the top flight.

Following Wednesday's 5-3 defeat at Nottingham Forest, Magath described Fulham's season as "a catastrophe" and asked for patience from the club's fans.
Several long-serving and senior members of the playing squad, including Brede Hangeland, Damien Duff and Steve Sidwell left the club over the summer.
Ex-Bayern Munich, Schalke and Wolfsburg boss Magath won the Bundesliga three times in his native Germany
but won just four matches during his seven-month tenure at Craven Cottage.


American billionaire Khan, who bought Fulham last summer, said he will "personally and immediately lead a thorough search" for a new manager.
"I thank our supporters for standing by us during these most difficult of times on the pitch, and promise better days ahead," he added.
Former Wales defender Symons, who has been appointed as caretaker manager during the interim period, scored 14 goals in 129 appearances for Fulham during a three-year spell with the club between 1998 and 2001.
The 43-year-old is currently part of Wales' backroom staff and has previously coached Fulham's academy side.

Fulham Chairman Shahid Khan Makes Managerial Change

Fulham Chairman Shahid Khan today named Kit Symons as Caretaker Manager of Fulham Football Club

and will personally and immediately lead a thorough search for the new First Team Manager of the Club.

Symons, the Under-21s Manager at Fulham, replaces Felix Magath.

Mr Khan today thanked Mr Magath for his efforts through the final three months of last season in the Barclays Premier League and the first seven matches this season in the Sky Bet Championship.

"This is an unfortunate but necessary change," Mr Khan said. "I am doing what I feel is right and needed for Fulham Football Club, for today as well as tomorrow.

"I thank our supporters for standing by us during these most difficult of times on the pitch, and promise better days ahead."

Fulham: Danny Murphy interested in manager's role
Former Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy says he would consider becoming the new manager at Craven Cottage.

Felix Magath was sacked with the club bottom of the Championship after seven games, following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

Murphy spent five seasons at Fulham making more than 200 appearances.

"I care about the club deeply and I've always had a desire to get involved but that's out of my hands," the 37-year-old told BBC Radio 5 live Sport.

"I've always said I'd like to go back to Fulham at some point in some capacity because I have an affinity with the supporters there.

"If they did want to speak to me, of course I'd be open-minded to that. I would never disregard something like that."

Murphy expects the Cottagers to name an experienced replacement but says the most important thing is that they avoid relegation.

"First and foremost, it's about finding the candidates that can get Fulham out of this mess and if people within the hierarchy of the club think that's someone with more experience than me, that's fine," he said.

"My desire is to see them not at the bottom of the Championship because one thing is for sure, if their form continues and there was another relegation, the club structure and finances would be a catastrophe."

"There were certain methods that he adopted or tried to instil into the players that many of them felt were very unusual to say the least, if not prehistoric," added Murphy.

Sky Sports understands Chris Hughton is in the frame for the Fulham manager's job.

Fulham are looking for a new boss after Felix Magath left the role last week following a miserable start to the season.

Kit Symons was placed in caretaker charge and stated after Tuesday night’s 2-1 Capital One Cup victory over Doncaster Rovers that he would be keen to take on the job permanently.

Fulham are considering their options and it is understood that former Newcastle United and Norwich City boss Hughton is in the running.

Hughton steered Newcastle to promotion from the Championship in 2010 and enhanced his reputation further with a stint at Birmingham City in 2011/12.

Birmingham managed to get into the play-offs despite playing in the Europa League, but they lost out in the semi-finals against Blackpool.

Hughton moved to Norwich the following season and guided them to 11th place in the Premier League in his first year at the helm, before leaving the role this April.

He is now in contention to go to Fulham, who are currently bottom of the Championship table after earning just a single point from eight games.

Fulham caretaker manager Kit Symons thinks their League Cup win over Doncaster will "certainly help" his bid to be appointed permanently.
Whites chairman Shahid Khan said he would lead a "thorough search" for a new boss after sacking Felix Magath.
Symons told BBC London 94.9: "I spoke with the owner the other day and he was brilliant and very supportive.
"I know there will be a search for the right man and they will not leave any stone unturned to find him."
He added: "I just hope that person is me."


German Magath was sacked last week after their poor start to the Championship season,
which had seen the west London club pick up just one point from their first seven league games of the season.
Symons spent three years with Fulham during his playing days and has previously scouted for the club and had spells in charge of their under-18 and under-21 sides.
On his appointment as caretaker, the former Wales international said "no-one understands the fabric of this club better than me".
He lost his first game in charge on Saturday, seeing his side beaten 1-0 by Blackburn after going down to 10 men following the sending-off of defender Shaun Hutchinson.
However, the 2-1 victory over League One Doncaster on Tuesday gave him his first win - and secured Fulham's first home victory since they beat Norwich in the Premier League in April.
"These fans are fantastic and they need and deserve something to cheer about," said the 43-year-old.
"It is a small start but I intend, along with the players and the staff, to build on this now and move on from here.
"All I can say is that whoever gets the job, the club and the team will be in a good state when they take over.
"There is a lot of work to do with them but I am loving every minute of this job."
