Transfer news: Leicester sign goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer from Chelsea on a free transfer.

Leicester City have signed veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on an 18-month contract from Chelsea on a free transfer.

The Australia international keeper, who has made over 500 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, Middlesbrough and Fulham over 18 years, joins the Foxes on a contract that runs until June 2016.

Leicester's first-choice keeper Kasper Schmeichel has been ruled out for six weeks with a foot injury so the 42-year-old will compete for a first-team place with Ben Hamer and Adam Smith.

Schwarzer told Sky Sports News HQ: "Over a week ago the club made an enquiry with Chelsea asking if I was available and I was given permission to speak to them.

"Over the last couple of days everything was agreed and it was all very straight forward.

"At Chelsea I definitely wasn't going to play unless something major happened while at Leicester they have got a lot of good keepers so there is going to be some good competition.

I want to put some pressure on and hopefully perform well enough to play.

"Leicester are a good club but probably lacking a bit of experience in the Premier League and obviously I have got that, and I hope I can bring that along and really help the boys out.

"The club has turned the corner in the last couple of games and played really, really well and got some good results.

“I am coming there with a lot of hope that we can continue that and with my experience hopefully we can take it even further.

"I know Nigel (Pearson) well from when we played together at Middlesbrough way back then and I know what he is like as a player and a person.

He's a fighter all the way and everyone speaks very highly of him at the club.

"I am really excited about the challenge and doing my very best for the club."  

Schwarzer joined Chelsea in 2013 and played 12 games last season, including one substitute appearance when replacing the injured Petr Cech in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid in April.

But this season the veteran goalkeeper found himself third choice behind Thibaut Courtois and Cech and has not played for the west London club since the final day of last season.

Schwarzer is Australia’s most-capped player with 109 appearances and represented the Socceroos at the World Cup Finals in Germany 2006 and in South Africa in 2010.

Leicester have completed their first signing of the January transfer window with the capture of Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

The 42-year-old will move on a free from the Blues - ending his 18 months service at the club.

Schwarzer's arrival to the King Power Stadium will be a welcome addition to boss Nigel Pearson as his side fight relegation.

Current first-choice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is currently out injured - having suffered a broken metatarsal during a training session in December.

The Danish international's sustained stress fracture has seen Ben Hamer play in his absence - with the Foxes having conceded seven goals in five games since.

Schwarzer's experience will prove vital to the East Midlands outfit who sit four points adrift from safety at the bottom of the table.

The former Australian international's departure from Chelsea also indicates that Petr Cech is likely to remain at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season at least.

Cech has been linked with a January move away from west London after losing his place to Thibaut Courtois in goal; but that possibility looks remote as Jose Mourinho's side continue to fight on four fronts for silverware.

Transfer news: Jose Mourinho confirms Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer will join Leicester



Chelsea's third-choice goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is leaving the club for Leicester, Jose Mourinho says.

Thibaut Courtois' return in the summer pushed both Schwarzer and Petr Cech down the order at Stamford Bridge, and the 42-year-old is yet to play this season.

Mourinho confirmed an imminent transfer, thought to be an 18-month deal, in the aftermath of his side's FA Cup third-round win over Watford on Sunday and said Jamal Blackman would consequently return from his loan at Middlesbrough.

The Chelsea manager also ruled out any prospect of a move for Cech, whose start against Watford was just his eighth of the season.

Schwarzer will add to Leicester's goalkeeping options in the continuing absence of Kasper Schmeichel, who is out with a broken metatarsal.

The details of Schwarzer's move are yet to be confirmed but Mourinho, speaking after his side's 3-0 victory, told the club's official website: "I want to publicly thank Mark Schwarzer because he’s leaving us and he was a fantastic guy for us.

"As a goalkeeper, when we needed him, he was there for us, and as a person and a professional he was an amazing guy in our group. On behalf of myself, my staff and my players I want to say we are going to miss the big guy and we wish him all the best in his new life at Leicester.

"We’ll bring Jamal back from Middlesbrough. He was on loan there but he wasn’t playing so for them it’s not a problem. For us, he’s a young, English goalkeeper. He can work with Courtois and Cech so for him it’s a good experience."
