Gus Poyet: Sunderland sack manager after crisis talks



Sunderland have sacked manager Gus Poyet after a run of just one victory in 12 Premier League games.

The Black Cats are one point above the relegation zone after Saturday's 4-0 home defeat by Aston Villa.

"Sadly, we have not made the progress that any of us had hoped for this season," said chairman Ellis Short.

"We find ourselves battling, once again, at the wrong end of the table. We have therefore made the difficult decision that a change is needed."

A Sunderland statement added that an announcement about Poyet's successor would be made "in due course".

The Wearsiders face a trip to West Ham on Saturday before a derby against Newcastle on 5 April.

Poyet, 47, took training on Monday morning and then met chief executive Margaret Byrne and other board members to learn his fate.

Poyet had taken over from Paolo Di Canio in October 2013 with the club bottom of the Premier League.

But four victories and a draw from their final six league games helped keep them up - a run that included wins at Chelsea and Manchester United, plus a draw at Manchester City.

Poyet also led the Wearsiders to the 2014 Capital One Cup final, which they lost to City.

"I would like to thank Gus for his endeavours during his time at the club, in particular last season's 'great escape' and cup final appearance, which will live long in the memory of every Sunderland fan," said Short.

This term, Sunderland have just four wins from 29 league matches and were knocked out of the FA Cup by League One Bradford in February.

Following that 2-0 defeat by the Bantams, Poyet wrote an open letter to fans calling for unity to help their battle to stay in the Premier League.

The Uruguayan had already accused Sunderland's supporters of "living in the past"  and the media of damaging the club.

Sunderland were 4-0 down to Villa before half-time on Saturday.

Some angry fans had to be restrained by security staff as they tried to get close to Poyet in the dug-out, while other supporters left the ground early.

新特蘭在上周六主場淨吞阿士東維拉4蛋後在英國時間周一發出聲明，表示己跟前領隊普耶分道揚鑣，外界即時傳出現年67歲的荷蘭藉教頭艾禾卡特（Dick Advocaat）是繼任人大熱，而這消息日前亦得到其本人確認。

據英國《鏡報》報道，艾禾卡特接受荷蘭傳媒訪問時表示：「我現在仍在酒店當中，不過稍後就會前往光明球場工作。」一般估計艾禾卡特周二上任，會即時領導球隊周二早上的操練。另外，艾禾卡特亦表明其合同直到季尾便完結，「現時原意是純粹為本季而設。」

艾禾卡特經驗豐富，曾統領荷蘭、韓國、比利時、俄羅斯和塞爾維亞國家隊，又執教過辛尼特、燕豪芬等多支球隊，而他本人亦很期待在英超比賽，「英超是我經常希望亮相的地方。」艾禾卡特補充。

Sky sources: Dick Advocaat to hold talks with Sunderland today

Dick Advocaat will hold talks with Sunderland today over the club's vacant head coach position, according to Sky sources.

The Black Cats have identified the former Netherlands boss as the man to save their Premier League status after sacking manager Gus Poyet earlier on Monday.

Poyet was relieved of his duties in the wake of Saturday’s 4-0 home defeat to Aston Villa which saw vast swathes of the crowd leave early in disgust.


The Uruguayan departs the Stadium of Light 17 months after taking over from Paolo Di Canio's turbulent regime, with the team just a point above the drop zone.


Advocaat is expected to be offered a short-term contract until the end of the season.


The former Rangers manager has been out of work since resigning as Serbia coach four months ago.


During his stint with Rangers, Advocaat won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup.


The 67-year-old has also won the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup with Zenit Saint Petersburg, plus the Eredivisie with PSV.

Advocaat is quoted in The Sun as saying: "Working in the Premier League is what I always wanted to do. This is a very big club.

"West Ham await on Saturday then there is the interruption of the international week.

"Then we have the derby with Newcastle. That's really something to look forward to."

Dutchman appointed as head coach until end of the season.

Sunderland AFC has appointed Dick Advocaat as head coach until the end of the current season.

The Dutchman brings a wealth of experience to the Stadium of Light, with over 30 years in management at both club and international level.

Speaking about the appointment, Sunderland AFC chairman Ellis Short said: “Dick has an incredible CV and vast experience of managing at the very highest level. We have one aim only now - to climb the table and everyone is fully focused on the task ahead of us.”

Mr. Advocaat said: “Sunderland is a big club and I am very much looking forward to the challenge ahead. We must now concentrate on Saturday as a priority and I can’t wait to get started.”  

Advocaat began his managerial career in his native Holland, going on to manage the Netherlands at international level on two occasions, after success at club level with a number of top sides in the Dutch league.

Following success in Holland, Advocaat moved to Scotland, guiding Rangers to five trophies during his four years at Ibrox, before returning to the Holland national team set-up in 2002. Spells with United Arab Emirates and South Korea were followed by three years in Russia with Zenit St. Petersburg, where he won the Russian League and Cup as well as the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 2008.  

Advocaat then went on to manage the Belgium and Russia national teams as well as Dutch clubs AZ Alkmaar and PSV before taking charge of the Serbia national side.  

He will be joined at the Stadium of Light by Zeljko Petrovic as first team coach and former Swansea and England under-20 goalkeeping coach, Adrian Tucker. Sunderland AFC academy coach Paul Bracewell will also support the head coach and his backroom team for the final nine games of the season.
