Manchester United's Louis Van Gaal one of four nominees for Manager of the Month



Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has been nominated for the Barclays Premier League Manager of the Month award for March.

During the month, United collected a maximum nine points from three games which featured back-to-back victories over two of their closest rivals – Spurs at Old Trafford and Liverpool at Anfield.

The Reds are currently fourth in the table, five and six points clear of Liverpool and Tottenham respectively.

Also nominated are Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger, Tim Sherwood of Aston Villa and Southampton’s Ronald Koeman.

The Gunners won all four of their Premier League games during the month, including two London derbies, and are now just one point behind second placed Manchester City.

Sherwood, who took over at Villa Park following the sacking of Paul Lambert in Feburary, saw his team collect six points from three matches to move out of the relegation zone.

And the list is completed by Koeman, who steered Southampton to seven points from their three games, which included a 1-1 draw against league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The winner will be announced on Good Friday morning at 6am.

Harry Kane chasing hat-trick of Barclays Premier League Player of Month awards



Man of the moment Harry Kane could earn his third straight player of the month award, after being nominated for the Barclays Premier League prize for March.

The Tottenham striker, winner for January and February, is one of six nominees along with Arsenal duo Olivier Giroud and Francis Coquelin, Aston Villa’s Gabriel Agbonlahor, Jordan Henderson of Liverpool and Marouane Fellaini of Manchester United.

The 21-year-old continued his rich vein of form with five goals in four games during a period which also saw him win his first senior cap in England's 4-0 victory over Lithuania, where he scored within two minutes of coming on as a substitute.

He notched a hat-trick against Leicester at White Hart Land and added two more in the London derby at Loftus Road.

Frenchman Giroud matched Kane's five-goal haul - including both in the 2-1 victory at Newcastle - while he and compatriot Coquelin were part of the Gunners side which won 2-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup.

Henderson also enjoyed a prolific month with three goals and an assist for Liverpool who collected nine points from their four matches. The England midfielder, who is also Liverpool’s stand-in skipper, completed 189 successful passes during March.

Fellaini played his part for United during a month which saw Louis van Gaal’s side claim a maximum nine points from their three games.

The Belgian netted the opener in a 3-0 win at home to Tottenham and made 111 successful passes.

And Agbonlahor scored three goals from as many Premier League games for a resurgent Villa who moved out of the relegation zone during March.

The highlight for the 28-year-old forward was a double in Villa’s vital match against fellow strugglers Sunderland at the Stadium of Light where the midlands club won 4-0.

Arsenal pair Wenger and Giroud win Premier League monthly awards



Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been named Premier League Manager of the Month for March and Olivier Giroud has made it a double for the Gunners by winning the Player of the Month award.

Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League by Monaco in March but won all four for their Premier League matches against Everton, QPR, West Ham and Newcastle.

Giroud bounced back from being substituted just an hour into Arsenal's Champions League first-leg defeat against
Monaco by scoring six goals in all competitions, averaging a goal every 78 minutes from 17 shots.

Wenger told Sky Sports News HQ: "You just focus on the next game and it reminds you that you have done well in the last month, but you focus on the next one.

"Winning is a mixture of quality and disappointment because we have gone out of the Champions league and that was a disappointment, but overall we are on a strong run in the Premier League and the FA Cup so it is mixed."

Giroud, who has prevented Tottenham striker Harry Kane from becoming the first player to win the prize three months in a row, says winning the award shows his strength of character.

He said: "I am in good form and it's nice to win this trophy and it will be nice in my living room.

"After the Champions League I was really pleased to score and bounce back and come back stronger.

"I don't like when I miss a game and I want to show my strength and character. I needed to score straight away after the (Monaco) game to keep confidence and to help the team to reach our target in the Premier League."

Wenger added: "Giroud is the symbol because in the first game against Monaco he got a lot of criticism and he responded to that with very strong performances - that shows quality and mental strength."
