Ashley Young set to sign new Manchester United contractAshley Young is set to sign a new contract with Manchester United. The winger was one of the surprise successes under Louis van Gaal last season, becoming a key figure in the Dutchman’s system.
Despite the £25m arrival of Memphis Depay and Angel di Maria’s determination to fight for his future at Old Trafford, United’s manager was keen to tie Young down to a long-term deal.
The 29-year-old is entering the final year of the contract he signed when joining United from Aston Villa in 2011.
He has impressed Van Gaal with his versatility - being able to play on either wing or as a wingback. The former England international will be the latest player to be handed a new deal after Michael Carrick, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones committed their futures to Old Trafford.
Young looked likely to be a casualty of Van Gaal’s reign when the Dutchman took over at the club last summer.
But instead he has flourished - starting each of United’s last 13 games of the season and earning Van Gaal’s praise.
“He is a player who wants to perform what you say,” said the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager.
“I think he fits good in my profile.
“We have played also with wing-backs and I think that is his best position.
“Now I use him as a winger and he does a very good job. I am pleased with him.”
Young is expected to sign a three-year deal.http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/manchester-united-news-ashley-young-9560766羊
