Manchester United: Jones set to sign new deal, despite Ramos interest Phil Jones is set to commit his future to Manchester United by signing a new long-term contract. Despite closing in on Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, United are still keen to keep the England international at the club.
Jones’ current deal expires next summer and the 23-year-old’s representatives have been locked in talks with Old Trafford’s hierarchy over an extension.
The centre back, who signed from Blackburn for £16m in 2011, has endured an injury-disrupted time at United - but coaching staff at the club still believe he can develop into a world class talent. United do not want to run the risk of losing him for nothing in 12 months’ time so have been eager to conclude negotiations on a deal worth around £80,000-a-week.
Jones was tipped to establish himself at the heart of defence for United and England when Sir Alex Ferguson lured him from Blackburn four years ago.
Despite some impressive displays, he never managed to force his way past Nemanja Vidic or Rio Ferdinand for a prolonged period.
But under Louis van Gaal he has shown signs of the promise that prompted Ferguson to describe as potentially the best player in the club’s history.
His versatility - able to play at right back and in midfield, as well as centre back - appeals to Van Gaal, who recently secured Chris Smalling’s long-term future as well.
United are hoping to land Ramos as part of the deal that will see David de Gea move to Real Madrid.
